Komen for the Cure Refunds Abortions and Planned Parenthood

COMMENTARY | Just yesterday, I wrote an article where I discussed why Komen decided to defund Planned Parenthood. I made the simple conclusion that they thought they would make more money from their pro-life supporters than their pro-choice supporters on the topic of abortion. Komen used the excuse of a congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood to make the defunding decision. I wrote at the end of yesterday’s piece that the pro-life supporters of Komen convinced them with their dollars, not their morals, to defund Planned Parenthood.

Well, the pro-abortion supporters fought back with a vengeance and Reuters reports that Komen will once again fund Planned Parenthood, abortions and all.

Komen changed its policy and will defund organizations only if convicted of criminal charges, keeping political issues out of consideration. Komen’s founder, Nancy Brinker, renewed her commitment to save women’s lives (those that have already left the birth canal without being aborted).

It was debatable whether Komen’s initial decision to defund Planned Parenthood was political or not. There is no debate that their decision to refund Planned Parenthood is totally a scared, political, business decision with all of the bad attention they received. Brent Bozell on Newsbusters stated this better than I could when he said that Komen “snapped like a toothpick” to the pressure that came from a pro-abortion media to change back their position on Planned Parenthood. I am sure that pro-abortion media may have hastened Komen’s about face on Planned Parenthood. However, this reversal was easily predicted. At the end of yesterday’s article, I wrote that pro-life groups had to keep the pressure on Komen not to refund Planned Parenthood, “lest Komen go back to doing so.” I am only surprised that it took just a few days for Komen to switch back.

Ms. Brinker and Komen for the Cure are businesswomen; the only difference is that they run a non-profit charity instead of a for-profit company. She made a quick reversal on what she thought was a bad business decision. If Komen somehow thought that defunding Planned Parenthood would help her again, they would do it again. Komen may have healthy women parts, but they have no spine as it snapped under pro-abortion pressure to refund Planned Parenthood.
