Kate Plus 8: Why TLC is Cancelling Reality Show

Today TLC has announced that it is cancelling its most successful reality TV show, “Kate Plus 8,” and that the finale of “Kate Plus 8″ will be shown on September 12 of this year. And a lot of people are in a “Hoorrayyyyy!” mood. Come on, folks, clue up: You know Kate Gosselin better than THAT: She WILL find a way to remain on TV!

In fact, TLC also announced that despite cancelling Kate Plus 8, TLC will film periodic episodes as future specials. So it appears that this certainly isn’t the end of Kate Plus 8; only the end as we know it: a reality TV series, of which 150 episodes will have been aired come its end.

In today’s announcement, oddly, TLC failed to explain why Kate Plus 8 was being cancelled. The announcement did not mention poor ratings. I very recently saw Gosselin on a talk show and she was asked by the host if TLC was planning on cancelling Kate Plus 8.

Gosselin admitted that there had been “talk” of TLC cancelling Kate Plus 8, but she denied that the talk would soon be reality for her reality show. Well, of course, turns out it was. However, Gosselin told the host that she wanted to continue the show, so this rules out the theory that TLC’s cancellation of Kate Plus 8 is because Gosselin wanted to quit the series. She had even told the host she loves what she does.

During the height of its popularity (when ex-husband Jon was part of it), the Gosselin show attracted 10 million viewers per episode. So no matter how many haters that the Gosselins have, they sure got a ton of viewers — even if it WAS to see Mady’s next meltdown.

But don’t put anything past Katezilla, because she’ll figure out a way to get at least one of her kids in a scripted movie. Out of eight kids who’ve been followed by cameras for most of or all of their lives, certainly at least one has to be stage-struck. And their mother will certainly fuel this passion. Or maybe she will push one or a few of the girls into beauty pageants.

I want to know why TLC cancelled Kate Plus 8. I wasn’t even watching the show (I’ve seen only the ones with Jon), but I was planning on tuning in in a few years to see how Mady and Cara were doing as adolescents.
