Items to Have in Preparation for Winter Driving

Now that fall is upon us, our chores to prep for winter are needed to be completed. Your vehicle has many items that should be taken care of to help you have a safe winter driving experience. Knowing what needs to be done will help you to plan how and when you will get these items completed.

1. Make sure you have winter wiper blades. Having the proper wiper blades that will not allow for water to freeze in the joints is very important. This way contact with your windshield while in use is maintained. 2. Have a ice scraper with snowbrush in the vehicle. Even if your car is kept in a garage be prepared. It could snow at work and needing the proper tools at the correct time could make the drive time safe for all involved. 3. Have your windshield washer fluid changed to winter fluid. Summer windshield washer fluid will freeze in lower temperatures. Getting the fluid changed to winter fluid will help alleviate any freezing so that when needed the washer fluid can help to clear and clean. 4. If needed, have your snow tires installed. Studded snow tires are recommended for states that get regular snow. Be sure to know the laws of when you can have studded tire installed. Studded snow tires are meant for day to day driving in snow conditions. During these conditions be sure to drive safe, slow and give plenty of space for other drivers in the road. 5. Have your radiator fluid test for freezing level. Protecting your engine during the winter is important. The coolant also works to protect engine block and coolant system from freezing, thus allowing your water pump to function properly. 6. Have a visual inspection completed. Your vehicle has many items that it is best a professional look at. A professional will look at your brakes, for fluid leaks and anything else that could be a potential problem. Most of these visual inspections can be done for free as long as any needed repairs are completed at the location. Also look for free inspection with oil change in your mailers home.
