Ideas for Decorating a Rustic Cabin Kitchen

A rustic cabin kitchen is comfortable and inviting. No matter how costly the decor, it does not convey conceit or pretentiousness. It has a laid-back look and feel. Guests naturally feel welcome, and family members want to spend time together in the heart of the home.

Each year I rent a home in Hesperia, Michigan, and although the outside is indicative of a classic Cape Cod, it has a beautiful rustic kitchen with country cabin style. The walls are finished in wood, and it is nothing like the paneling of decades past. It is absolutely gorgeous, and the decorating scheme is what makes it stand out from other kitchens of similar style.

Add Open Rustic Cabin Shelving

A rustic cabin kitchen that lacks cabinet space is the perfect place for open shelving. The kitchen in the Hesperia home that I rent has beautiful heavy wood shelving with wooden brackets. The shelves are more than just decorative. They are used to openly store plates, cups and other kitchen items that serve double-duty.

The dishware on the shelves is beautiful turquoise colored Fiestaware. The lovely shade of blue is striking against the stained wooden walls and shelves. Brown and blue are a gorgeous combination. The glasses are crystal clear and the bowls are actually creamy beige and brown crocks. They are all a part of the decorating scheme in this rustic cabin kitchen.

Add a Rustic Table and Benches

When decorating your rustic cabin kitchen, consider a heavy table with benches instead of chairs. The wood table and bench set in the Hesperia kitchen matches the wood lined walls, and it is perfect for the room. The table is in front of a large window with a view to the woods, and it looks and feels as if it is isolated deep within a forest. The benches provide more seating than an ordinary dining set and they are more fitting for the style of the space.

Consider Decorating in an Outdoor Theme

Decorating a rustic cabin kitchen can include a theme, and wildlife or another outdoor subject is idyllic with this style. The kitchen in the Hesperia home was decorated with duck decor. A painting of a male and female mallard with rustic frame embellished the wall between the door and the window. Another area held two realistic cast resin mallards that were perched above a tall clay floor vase filled with cattails.

A rustic cabin kitchen can be enhanced with floral decor, majestic deer, pheasant, red fox, deep green pines or absolutely anything related to cabin life. However, a theme is never required when decorating a kitchen with rustic cabin style. Pottery and/or wooden implements are fantastic decor, and they can turn a kitchen designed primarily of wood into a warm and cozy cabin in the woods, no matter where it is located.
