Ideas for Decorating a Country Dining Room with Cathedral Ceilings

A country dining room with cathedral ceilings can be a welcoming space, even if it is exceptionally large. It can also include all of the luxuries of the 21st century while maintaining old-time charm. It takes the right combination of decor, furnishings and more when decorating with classic rural style. Try my ideas for decorating a country dining room with cathedral ceilings, and make it a comfortable and exceptionally inviting space.

Add an Old Fashioned Wood-Burning Stove

One of my St. John Indiana clients had a beautiful dining room with beamed cathedral ceilings that soared twenty-five feet to the crown. She wanted to add country charm while making the large airy space look and feel cozier and more comfortable. I suggested beginning with the addition of an old fashioned wood-burning stove.

My client chose a Lopi Leyden wood stove that was beautifully detailed. It was as beautiful as it was decorative, and it was an excellent choice. We used two old fashioned ceiling fans to pull the warm air down from the cathedral ceilings. Not only did it add to the decorating scheme of her dining room, but it helped to warm this massive area of the home.

Install Paned Interior Windows for a View from Above

The bare upper wall in my client’s country dining room was far too expansive to appear welcoming, even if we chose a huge work of old-fashioned wall art when decorating the space. Cathedral ceilings can make a space look and feel cold. My client wanted to open the upper floor by turning the upstairs room into a loft, but I had another idea.

I suggested adding two windows with nine panes between the cathedral ceiling and the upper limit of the lower level between the dining area and the kitchen. The windows would break up the large bare wall that graced the upper portion of the dining room, and they would also provide the view that she wanted without the cost of extensive remodeling. She loved this unique decorating idea. The interior windows gave the dining room an old fashioned look and feel while serving a valuable purpose. Her cathedral ceilings provided a lovely view.

Hang a Beautiful Country Quilt on an Upper Wall

My client had a beautiful hand-stitched Amish quilt that she wanted to use in the decorating scheme of her country dining room. Having cathedral ceilings was highly beneficial. I suggested hanging the stitched work of art on the upper wall to the right of the pair of interior windows. This was a great way to incorporate the country quilt into the decorating scheme of the dining room while enhancing a bare wall. It looked spectacular, and she was very happy with the placement of her hand made quilt. Without the cathedral ceilings, a display of this magnitude would not have been possible.

In addition to the aforementioned decorating ideas, I suggested finishing the project with a built-in country sideboard with glass doors. It faced my client’s dining room table, and it had a beautiful black walnut top. She covered the dining table with a classic checkered tablecloth and topped it with a wooden bowl of fresh fruit. She filled the sideboard with her grandmother’s dishes. It all went together beautifully.

In the end she was thrilled with these decorating ideas and the final results of our country dining room project. Best of all it cost far less than she had expected. Incorporate some or all of these ideas into your country dining room decorating plans, and create an inviting space for gathering with your family and friends.
