Determine the focus of your business. Some businesses focus solely on basic mending and alterations, while other sewing businesses complete custom sewing projects, such as drapes, pillows or upholstery projects, or create homemade dresses and other garments for individuals.

Invest in a reliable sewing machine and basic sewing equipment such as needles, thread and sewing scissors.

Find a location for your business. If the business will be run out of your home, designate a space in your home for working on the business and create a professional-looking living room if you intend on receiving clients in your home. For a business outside of the home, consider renting space from a local dry-cleaning business or bridal boutique before purchasing your own storefront.

Price your services. Create a list of services you would like to perform and create a list of prices by estimating the time and materials it will take to complete each task. Talk with those who have similar businesses to get a feel for what to charge. As you get more business and learn more about each service, these prices may change.

If you operate the business out of your home, place a large sign in your front yard advertising the business.
