How to Make You Own Dog Poop Composter

Having a dog is great. Throwing away dog poop is not! There is a way that you can compost your best friend’s poop that is easy, odor free, and keeps it out of the landfill.

What you essentially will be doing is building a mini septic tank in a secluded area of your backyard. Of course, first you will need to make sure your dog is potty trained.

1. Buy or find an outdoor trash can with a lid. I used a plastic round 20 gal trash can and it can handle the waste of our one 50 lb dog. A large or smaller trash can be used depending on how many dogs you have. Metal trash cans can also be used.

2. Cut the bottom off of the trash can. Drill many holes (about ½ inch in size) all around the walls of the trash can. Do not drill any holes within three inches of the top lip of the can.

3. Dig a trash can sized hole in a secluded spot in your yard. The dog poop composter wont stick (unless you leave the lid off) but it is a little unsightly.

4. Bury your trash can so that the dirt line is three inches below the lip of the can and you can easily secure the lid.

5. Add a couple handfuls of rocks or gravel to the bottom. This will help with drainage of the compost.

6. start filling the composter with poop!

7. After a couple days of dog waste clean up has been added to the composter, add in a septic starter enzyme which can be purchased at any hardware store or online. This enzyme will help with the decomposition. As you continue to add dog poop you will need to add more septic enzyme about every 6 months or so.

Because pet (dog and cat) poop is toxic you can not use the compost you make on a vegetable garden but you could use it on a flower or ornamental garden bed. However, my suggestion is to not use it at all. Instead opting to leave it at the bottom of the composter and allow it to slowly seep into the soil. That way you don’t have to mess with it. This composter also works with cat waste. However you will need to use a kitty litter that is compostable as well like yesterdays news which is made of newsprint. Most kitty litters are made of clay and do not compost well.
