How to Make a Patchwork Decoupage Chair

Scuffed up, scared old wooden chairs make the ideal base for a fun and colorful decoupage chair. Rejuvenate the old chair with scraps of old fabric. The fabric is attached to the chair using Mod Podge. Mod Podge is a special decoupage solution that is available at hobby and craft stores. The Mod Podge is applied to the surface with a sponge brush. It appears a milky color to begin but then dries clear.

Things You’ll Need:

Old wooden chair
Fabric scraps
Scissors
Mod Podge
Sponge brush

Instructions:

Step 1 – Clean the surface of the old wood chair with soap and water. Allow the chair to dry completely before beginning the decoupage process.

Step 2 – Cut the fabric scraps into pleasing shapes. Place the pieces on the seat of the chair to begin. Rearrange the pieces until the desired pattern is achieved. Overlap each piece approximately ¼-inch.

Step 3 – Remove the fabric pieces and place them in a safe location. Try to keep the pieces in the predetermined pattern.

Step 4 – Paint the surface of the chair seat with Mod Podge. Place the fabric pieces on the Mod Podge and press into place.

Step 5 – Continue the fabric placement over the desired surfaces on the chair. Always brush a coat of Mod Podge on the chair to attach each fabric piece.

Step 6 – Brush a coat of Mod Podge over all fabric. Allow the Mod Podge to dry 60 minutes. Repeat the process for a total of three coats.

Step 7 – Place the decoupaged chair in a safe location to dry 24 hours before use.

Use the same process to decoupage wallpaper, patterned heavy wrapping paper, photographs or gift cards to the chair’s surface.
