How to Make a Foxtrot Quincy Iguana Polymer Clay Christmas Ornament

The Foxtrot comic strip has been published nationwide since 1987 and one of the most popular characters in the comic is Jason’s iguana Quincy. Known for tormenting Jason’s older sister Paige and having some hilarious adventures himself, you can easily recreate the reptile for a festive Christmas ornament.

Using polymer clay and a few simple tools, Quincy can be created in less than 30 minutes.

Materials

Green, yellow, white and black polymer clay is needed to craft Quincy. Basic clay tools like a toothpick and craft knife are all you need to form the design. Red or green string and ribbon is used to hang the ornament up once the craft is complete.

Quincy’s Body

Roll out a large chunk of green polymer clay. Form the clay into a ball. Quincy has a little bit of a gut to him, so bulge the stomach out a little bit. Add an oval patch of yellow to the stomach. Spread it out flat and even against the clay.

Run the toothpick horizontally across the stomach to form three groove lines on the stomach. This replicates the cartoon stomach of Quincy and showcases his reptile skin.

Quincy’s Tail and Head

Roll a chunk of green clay on a flat surface to form the tail of the iguana. The tail should start out thick and get smaller as it reaches the end. Press the tail firmly into the bottom of the body section. Sit the body upright and wrap the tail around so it reaches towards the front of the stomach.

Form a sphere out of a half block of polymer clay. Press your thumb into the top of the sphere to push out a nose for Quincy’s face. Pinch a thick neck on the bottom of the head and attach it to the body section of clay. Now you should see the basic body of the creation.

Create five quarter sized circle, two nickel sized circles and two dime sized circles out of yellow polymer clay. Cut each circle in half except two of the quarter sized ones. Starting with the larger circles, place them from the head, down the back and all the way down the tail to form the standing scales of the iguana.

Go from biggest to smallest and press them in so they will stay standing up in the air. Keep the scales spaced tightly together. Extend them all the way down to the end of the eye. Use the full circle pieces to create body marks on the left and right side of Quincy’s head.

Finishing Touches

Roll two eyes out of white polymer clay. Use a dab of black paint or black clay to create small spots on the eyes. Place the eyes directly on the top of the head. Add four small sections of green polymer clay to extend two legs and arms for Quincy.

The arms on Quincy are very skinny compared to his body, keep that in mind when molding them.

Stick a toothpick through the center of his head. Bake the clay according to the package instructions. Once done baking, tie ribbon or yarn through the ornament and hang it on your tree for a Foxtrot Christmas delight.
