How to Enjoy Skateboarding in the Fall/Winter Seasons

Skateboarding can be an all year sport; however, winter weather can make it unpleasant. When the winter months come around, it can be tempting to go a skate park; this won’t always be convenient. There are a few things you can do to maintain your level of skateboarding during the winter, as well as expand on your skills, regardless of the weather.

Realize – Realize that skateboarding is not dead when the winter season comes. Understand that the summer time is when skateboarding companies tend to have the most events. Competitions, demos, and general skateboarding events usually occur in the summer most often. These events usually don’t take place as often as they would during the summer; do not let this be discouraging. There are other things to consider when thinking of the winter season of skateboarding. The winter season can be a time to expand on your existing skills that you already have. Use the fact that there aren’t many competitions going on to your advantage by learning new tricks. Practice the tricks you have learned over the winter, that way when the next competition season comes around, you’ll have a whole new bag of tricks to show off.

Location – Finding a good location to skate in the winter is important for many reasons. The first reason being that if you don’t have access to a skate park, you’ll always have a place to skate when all else fails. Take for example, if it’s raining outside, then practice tricks in your garage! It’s simple as that, find a place that you know you will always have access to.

Expand on your existing skills – Practicing tricks in your garage during the winter can benefit you in many ways. Skateboarding is a sport in which you can almost always get better at; there is not stopping point. If you only know how to kick-flip, learn how to do a 180 kick-flip! Continue to expand on your existing skills, and never stop. If you are good at doing a heel-flip into a manual, then let the next trick you learn be a heel-flip into a nose manual. There is no limit to how good you can get at skateboarding, continue to practice tricks in your garage when the weather is too cold, and you might be able to learn these tricks by the summer. Realize that during the winter, it is okay to focus on other things besides skateboarding. Whatever your hobbies may be, continue to do them, or find a new one.

Clothing – Consider buying comfortable clothing for skateboarding in the winter. Flannels, sweatshirts and beanies are all stylish items that keep you warm during cold months. Flannels are button-down cotton shirts which will keep you warm. Beanies prevent your ears from getting cold, as well as protect against the wind. Before the winter season starts, think of the types of winter clothes you like and get them. Getting your clothes prior to winter will prepare you for the season.

Lastly, keep your skateboarding friends close and skate with them often to prevent getting bored with skateboarding. Let the winter be motivation to get better by the time summer comes around. Skateboarding in the winter can be tough, depending on where you live. However, with the right clothes, places to skate and friends, you can still have a good time.
