Honoring Women in March-2012 Events in Ohio Celebrating Women in History

The year 1911 was the first time women were recognized for their paths in history. It wasn’t until the late 1970’s that the Sonoma School District in California became the first to dedicate an entire week to women who made a difference. In 2001, Congressman Hatch and Congresswoman Mikulski started the National Women’s History Month. March has become dedicated to Women’s History Month.

The Ohio Statehouse

Each year the Ohio Statehouse staff provide tours for visitors to view an exhibit that honors the great women of Ohio. Beginning on March 1, 2012, visitors can explore a piece of history and pay tribute to six women who made a difference in state and national government. The Ohio Statehouse is located on 1 Capitol Square in downtown Columbus.

One woman who made a difference in Ohio, and the national level in the early 1900’s was Florence E. Allen. Florence E. Allen was an Ohio lawyer. She was a part of the Cuyahoga County Prosecuting team in 1919 according to www.ohiohistorycentral.org. In 1920, Florence E. Allen became the first woman to be a part of Ohio’s largest and most honored court system. Twelve years later, she became a judge for the Sixth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals according to www.ohiohistorycentral.org. She was the first woman to become a judge for the Supreme Court. Florence E. Allen is a part of the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame according to www.ohiohistorycentral.org.

The First Ladies National Historical Site and Library is located in the Canton home of Ohio Congressman William McKinley and his wife Ida Saxton McKinley. The First Ladies National Historical Site Library houses over 5,000 books, photos and films capturing the lives of the women who portrayed a variety of roles as wives of congressmen and Presidents of the United States.

The First Ladies National Historical Site and Library is located near the McKinley Grand Hotel on Market Avenue in Canton, Ohio.

Colleges also provide great sites to learn more about respected women who have made and make a difference in Ohio and nationally. Here are a few upcoming events to be held at Ohio colleges in March 2012.

Youngstown State University

The Youngstown State University Women’s Studies Department is once again hosting a series of poetry, book discussions, films, movies and art shows to honor women who made a difference in history. The Ohio State University Multicultural Center

The Ohio State University Multicultural Center is hosting an art media display titled “Women Standing In The Gap” throughout March 2012. This exhibit will be honoring women by using drawings and paintings,photos, videos, poems and other medias in the art genre. The Ohio State University Multicultural Center is located on High Street on The Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio University International Women’s Day

Ohio University staff, faculty and student leaders will be hosting their fourth annual International Women’s Day Festival on March 11, 2012. This is an annual celebration of women’s present day life, their future and what was accomplished in the past. This event is held in the Baker Ballroom at the Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

There have been so many women who have not only made a difference in the outcome of history, but also in the lives of their families, friends and communities. When the opportunity is right consider checking out a local museum or library to learn more about women who have made a difference.
