Halloween Reading — the Best of the Scary Halloween Novels

I like to read, I enjoy it. Novels for me have always been better then movies as far as I am concerned. My imagination has always been so much better then anything I could see on TV or at the movies. With that in mind I thought I would make a nice scary movie list of books!

Pet Semetary – Stephen King 1983 – You have likely all seen this film, it doesn’t hold a candle to the book though. Being scared and being terrified are two very different things.

The Exorcist – William Peter Blatty 1971 – Even I can admit to this movie freaking me out a bit. Your imagination will make this so much better though. Nothing like imagination to make demonic possession really come to life.

Salems Lot – Stephen King 1975 – Neither the film nor the mini series they did for this truly lives up to the novel itself. Like so many of King’s novels they just can’t be done justice in any other format.

Dracula – Bram Stoker 1897 – Oh yes, everything you ever heard about a Vampire came from here originally and let’s not forget that real vampire’s do not sparkle.

The Haunting of Hill House – Shirley Jackson 1959 – I’m not even sure this was ever a movie, I read it after having to read “The Lottery” in high school. This is one creepy kind of mind bending story.

The Amityville Horror – Jay Anson 1977- Yes indeed a horror film classic. So much was left out of this movie. The sequels ruin it completely. This is a very frightening story and one that everyone should read.

Zone One – Colson Whitehead 2011 – I just read this more on a whim then anything else its what got me thinking about Halloween stories. This may not be scary so much as interesting and fun. However since it gave me the idea to do this article for this Halloween weekend I put it in this list. I really enjoyed this and I’m sure you will too.

So there you go, head on down to the library and get yourself something scary to read Heck think of any movie thats scary, then go find that book if you want. Dracula is actually available as a free Ebook if you would rather just jump right in. There are of course hundreds of great horror novels out there from A to Z you can just head on down to the library and grab one. These happen to be my favorites. The Exorcist I was reading really late one night on the couch when a small earthquake struck, shaking the couch and frightening the hell out of me I think thats where some of my gray hair came from. You can also try, Frankenstein, although not a horror novel you can get it free from the Ebook link above.
