Driver’s License Renewal in Texas

I read with great joy about the approval of two new “megacenters” that will be built in North Texas which will accommodate those of us who need to renew our driver’s license, or in my case, replace my lost license. And listen to this: they will accept credit cards and even online payments. Welcome to the 21’st century.

The goal of the megacenters will be to get you your license within 30 minutes and if they can achieve that goal it will be a miracle. The current situation is so absurd that it encourages you to not even apply (no wonder one in four people in Dallas do not have a driver’s license or insurance.)

I live in Rockwall County (just east of Dallas) and I recently lost my license. When I went to the license renewal center to get a replacement, I was horrified when I found some 150 lined up going all the way out of building into the street. To add to my dismay, the temperature was a balmy 107 degrees. I bid the chaos adieu, and headed back to my air conditioned office thinking I must have hit the agency at a bad time. Returning the next morning, I found the same mess the following morning with one exception: the people lined up into the street all had coffee and donuts. (What a great place to be a coffee and donut vendor.)

This is a ridiculous situation that is found in driver’s license bureaus all over Dallas. Are you telling me that we can spend 4 trillion dollars on a war (10 billion a month) and we cannot afford to hire a few people to help people get their license renewed? Is it really necessary to make people wait in line for four hours to replace a lost license? Give me a break. Of all the asinine things that go on in the city, this tops the cake.

What do you feel about this?
