DK Diner Restaurant Review

Since the DK Diner is right in our own backyard, we decided to give it a try. The parking lot is tiny but the place is far enough off the beaten path in Grandview that street parking is available and abundant. The small dining area was rather crowded for 1:30 in the afternoon but, given that the place closes at 2:00 p.m., this is understandable.

The air circulating around the room smelled wonderful and really got our appetites going. The cashier told us to seat ourselves and took our drink orders. However, she did not explain that the soda fountain was self serve. Usually this is pretty obvious, but in this case the fountain is located behind the register. And so are the cups. So one would assume that getting drinks to the table was up to the house. After watching three or four people walk behind the counter and refill their drinks we got the idea.

Now, on to the breakdown.

Opening the menu, I was glad to see that most of the fare was in the $2-5 range. This is one of the reasons that diners are probably my favorite lunch stop. I decided to get a donut before lunch and anyone who doesn’t is a crazy person. The donuts are excellent and I am a really big fan of the fact that they ice over the hole in the middle.

I decided to order a combo with a hamburger and fries as well as a chili dog la carte . The food came out rather quickly and everything looked pretty delicious at first inspection. There was a generous portion of fries, and the hamburger and chili dog were above average in size considering the price. The hamburger came with the garden on the side and the chili dog had plenty of chili and cheese.

The burger tasted just how it looked – an average diner style burger. I would have been happier if the sandwich had sweet relish, though, because I feel it really seals the “diner burger” taste. The chili dog, on the other hand, was not as it seemed. The hot dog was fine, but the chili had a very interesting taste.

I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but the chili tasted like it was made out of ground up Slim Jims. No, I am not kidding, I am being completely serious. But the thing is, I don’t hate Slim Jims. In fact I kind of like them, a lot. I also like Randy Savage a lot. Anyway, it was definitely the most interesting tasting chili dog I’ve ever encountered and sometimes it’s nice to get a curveball just when lunch seemed to be going as average and boring as possible.

Verdict: 5/8 PJs
Not interesting enough to be a 6, way too good to be a 4.

The DK Diner was not too busy when we went there. It was easy to get a table, and the service was really pretty good. I ordered an italian sub with a side of onion rings and a white-icing frosted long john donut. I was hungry and the donut came out first, so I ate it first. It was delicious, the filling was really good, and the donut was rich but not too dense.

The Italian sub was good, but not great. The vegetables were really good and fresh. The bread was good, but it didn’t wow me. The meat was also good, but I just felt there could have been a little more of it. The onion rings, on the other hand, were awesome. I’m not sure whether they were hand battered on not, but if they were frozen they were the best frozen onion rings available. They were seriously one of the best onion rings I have tried in Columbus.

I don’t really have much else to say. The food was really good, but the experience was a little forgettable. If your looking for a good, fast lunch at a pretty good price, I would recommend the DK Diner. My only real complaint is that I wish we would have come for breakfast, because that looked unbelievable. My girlfriend ordered some of it and I had a bite – it was awesome.

Verdict: 6/8 PJs
I think breakfast would have been a 7 or an 8.
