Creative Ways to Furnish a Small Entryway

Not every front entrance is expansive or completely separate from adjoining rooms. Some are nothing more than small tiled areas designed for taking off soiled footwear, but even a small entryway can hold much more. It is really very easy to furnish the area with a few clever and practical tips and home design tricks.

I currently have a very small entryway, and I had to find ways to use it to the fullest potential. The front entrance is part of the living room, and the linoleum tile flooring is connected to the dining room. I devised a number of creative ways to furnish the small entryway while making it appear to seamlessly flow into both spaces. It has an open look and feel, and it is more than sufficient for holding footwear, pet leashes, outgoing mail and more. Try my creative ways to furnish your small entryway, and make the most of available square footage.

Connect it to Adjoining Rooms with a Stylish Rug

A small entryway can appear a little larger if it is defined by something. I placed a smaller black and tan rug just beyond the entrance door to absorb moisture and catch dirt, and I placed a larger more luxurious rug where the linoleum meets the living room carpeting. The colors and style of the two rugs give the two spaces something in common while creating an inviting path toward the living area of the home. Furnish your small entryway with stylish rugs. This simple technique helps to visually join a small entryway with the living room while making it a clearly separate space.

Hang a Sturdy Coat Rack on the Entryway Wall

When seeking creative ways to furnish a small entryway, consider adding a coat rack. It does not have to be a freestanding coat rack that takes up valuable square footage. Furnish the entry with a wall mounted coat rack. It will provide a great place to temporarily hold the most commonly used outerwear. It will also give guests a place to hang their coats and hats.

I chose to furnish my small entryway with wooden wall-mounted peg hooks. My daughter and I use it to hang our favorite coats during the cooler months of the year. She also uses it as a place to hang her book bag when it is not overloaded with heavy books.

When coats are not required, our wall mounted coat rack becomes a place to hang decor. I purchased ornaments that are great for more than embellishing the holiday tree. As the photo shows, they are cursive letter ornaments. I purchased one for each family member. It indicates their specific area to hang their coat, and the decorative initials beautifully embellish the peg hooks when not in use.

Use a Key Basket and a Shelf to Hold Mail and More

If your small entryway offers another bare wall, furnish it with a small decorative shelf unit with three or more hooks. If pets are a part of the family, use it to hold leashes, keys and a small key basket. It is important to furnish a small entryway using methods that are more than just utilitarian. A key basket and shelf adds a decorative touch while serving a valuable purpose.

A short dividing wall separates my small entryway from the dining room, and I used it to hang a small shadowbox-style shelf unit with three wooden peg hooks. I used one of the peg hooks to hold a Longaberger key basket. However, I do not use the basket to hold keys. My keys are hung on nearby hooks along with my dog’s leashes. I use the key basket to hold local restaurant menus and coupons.

Use some or all of my ideas to furnish and decorate your small entryway. If space allows, you can also add a small hassock with hidden storage. Not only will it serve as a place for people to sit while putting on and taking off shoes, but it will also hold gloves and other small items. In any case, furnish it in ways that are decorative and practical to get the most out of your small entryway. It can be as useful as a large foyer.
