Civilization 5 – Babylon DLC Guide

The Babylon pack for Civilization 5 is a set of downloadable content that can be added on to the base game after purchase which adds the Babylon civilization as one of the playable races in the game. This article will give an overview of what you will get when purchasing the DLC.

Civilization Leader: Nebuchadnezzar
Historically speaking, the Babylonian leader Nebuchadnezzar was responsible for building such feats of architecture as the Hanging Gardens and the Ishtar Gate. Other points of note include his destruction of Solomon’s Temple and the conquering of Judah and Jerusalem in the Bible. In-game, he typically shows disdain towards everyone and as an AI player will focus heavily on Wonder Building, Science and Defense more than any other factor. You can expect him to try to achieve any sort of victory condition available, with science being the easiest with his ability while also becoming hostile if you build multiple wonders, especially those he is after himself. Finally Babylonian armies tend to be of average size with heavily defended cities.

Special Ability: Ingenuity
The Ingenuity ability benefits the Babylonian civilization’s penitence for science, granting two significant effects. The first and most significant is that Great Scientists are produced at double the normal rate of a civ with the second granting a Great Scientist upon discovering the Writing technology. These will both help spur further growth in science for the Babylonians.

Special Unit: Bowman
The special unit for this race is the Bowman, which is a replacement for the Archer of the Ancient era, being an early-game benefit as opposed to late-game special units. The Bowman improves upon the Archer by adding +33 percent strength for melee offense/defense and +25 percent ranged combat strength over the base unit. These benefits allow greater survivability on the front lines of your army while also posing better defense against Warriors and other close combat unit types. As a slight offset to this increased damage, the Bowman takes 5 more production to create (75 vs 70) for a 7 percent increase in cost.

Special Building: Walls of Babylon
These replacements for the standard Walls give a great defensive benefit to all Babylon cities by granting +33 percent (+2) defense over the basic variant while also costing 10 production less (-13 percent) to construct. This allows the city’s ranged attacks (through garrisoned units) and defensive strikes to cause significantly more damage, making Babylon a difficult civilization to conquer through military methods.
