Cake Balls for Your Wedding Reception

Cake balls, or cake pops, for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of trying, are delightful little bites of cake mixed with frosting, rolled into a ball and covered with different frostings. Cake balls are just rolled up cake, usually placed on small plates, whereas cake pops are on a stick. They have become a very hot trend in the cake world, and a must-have for any special events where cake is in order, which for me, The Cake Critic, is pretty much any event.

One of the best things about cake balls is their size, which means one of two things: you can try several different cake ball flavors instead of eating a whole piece of cake, or you will eat several cake balls without realizing how many you have consumed at a sitting. In other words cake balls can be very good for a diet as it allows a taste without overdoing it, but then again that depends on a person’s will-power.

Cake balls can be decorated in so many different ways ranging from plain melted almond bark with drizzles on top to hand-painted with fancy faces, logos and in as many flavors are as there are flavors of cakes. They can also be made vegan, sugar-free, or gluten-free.

They are addicting. At your wedding reception, plan for at least 3 cake balls per guest, but expect that some guests will go back for seconds or thirds. It is a good idea to have a wedding cake available, in a smaller size, if cake balls or pops will be served at the reception. Many brides use cake balls surrounding the wedding cake so guests have a choice of which treat to take, but expect some guests to take both a slice of wedding cake and at least one or two cake balls. They are too cute to pass up.

Before deciding on serving only wedding cake, be sure to ask your baker about cake balls. You can be sure to compliment your wedding cake with the cake balls, or can even use the cake balls as a sort of groom’s cake. It will really make your reception pop.
