Bill Maher Thinks the Republicans ‘Stole the Jews’

COMMENTARY | Bill Maher, the HBO ranter, is apparently put out that a considerable amount of the Jewish vote crossed over in the special election to fill the seat Anthony Weiner vacated in the New York 9th Congressional District.

The choice of words he used to express this disquiet was also very interesting. “Somehow,” Maher said, “the Republicans stole the Jews.”

The way Maher expressed it summons an image of Republicans, like the army of Nebekenezer, descending upon Jewish neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, carrying off Jews into bondage before forcing them to pull the lever for Mr. Turner, the Republican candidate.

One can just imagine what Maher would say if Obama started to lose the black vote.

“The Republicans have stolen the blacks!” may something that Maher, for all his propensity to say the most offensive things imaginable, might hesitate to utter,

In any case, the Republicans have not so much “stolen the Jews” as Obama has kicked them out, with a “We don’t serve your kind here.” Obama’s Middle Eastern policy has not sit well with a lot of Jewish voters. This is something that has begun to overwhelm traditional liberal values among the American Jewish community.

Maher, for a militant atheist, certainly sees a lot of things through a religious prism. The only president who can be recalled basing American foreign policy on the Bible was Jimmy Carter, who once opined (against considerable recent evidence) that he supported Israel as it was foreordained in Biblical prophecy. Not even George W. Bush, whose religiosity is without question, has ever publicly said that.

There are no doubt many evangelicals who base their support of the Jewish state on their religious faith. But considerably more people base it on shared values. Israel is based on western beliefs in democracy, tolerance, and the rule of law. Her enemies have by and large been the sort of people who encourage their kids to strap bombs to themselves and take out everyone on the public street, as Hamas does in its children’s programming.

Is the establishment of Israel a sign of the end times? I am not expert enough to say. But Bill Maher’s presence on the airways must be such a sign. It stands to reason.
