Appblaster Review: 2011 Hot New Toy for Your iPhone

The Appblaster is billed as “the first interactive gun for gaming.” It is a unique product that when used with your existing electronics can become an interactive gaming experience whenever, wherever you are.

The Spinmaster Appfinity Appblaster was launched in the summer of July 2011. The Appblaster allows you to use your iPhone or iPod Touch to play app based games on the device. Your iPhone or iPod device securely attaches on the top of the Appblaster gun where the “sights” would be on a traditional weapon. Your device is placed into a white plastic case before attaching to the Appblaster so no harm will come to your device. The Appblaster is around 18 inches long, but the back part of the gun detaches leaving you with more of a handgun style gun. Either way you decide to play, it will still allow access to the Appblaster’s two triggers.

Pulling the triggers on the gun registers as finger taps on your device allowing your gameplay to register on the screen. The games use the gyroscope and camera of your iPhone to capture images of your surroundings and they become the backgrounds of your gameplay.

One downside of the Appblaster is that you must use specially developed games and currently there are only three. According to their website, a fourth game is coming out soon called Wacky Hunter. The games that are available now offer play in three different game styles. Alien Attack is a game where you find and destroy Alien creatures who are lurking about. This game is available for free. Pull! Is a clay pigeon, skeet shooting game, and is available for purchase. A classic Tin Can Alley game is also currently available for purchase for play on the Appblaster.

The limited game options seem to be the only downside to the Appblaster. The games are simple, yet entertaining enough to appeal to a wide range of ages. For example the games were simple enough for my 7-year-old daughter to understand, but were challenging enough for our 14-year-old sons to stay engaged in.

Especially attractive is the Appblaster’s price. To get this much fun and innovative technology for only $20 is amazing. This is definitely a worthwhile purchase and something new and interesting for iPhone toting gamers.
