2011 College Football Playoff: Sweet and Simple Round One

How do we get to the National Championship, coach?” Coach replies, “We have to win our conference first, then it’s one game at a time against the best teams in the country!” Oh how I wish it were that clearly defined.

The Sweet and Simple (SAS) College Football Playoff format, originally proposed November 30, 2011, includes the champions from each of the eleven football bowl subdivision (FBS) conferences, plus the independent team with the best win-loss record. These twelve teams are then seeded into a standard sixteen team bracket, ranked in order based on the strength of the conference they play in, with the top four teams having a first round bye. If you want to see the ranking score for each conference, you may use the supporting link at the bottom of this article to see the original proposal.

Today we reveal the results of the games of round one, plus show the matchups for next week’s round two. There is a very simple rule being used to simulate these games, which will be revealed after the championship game has been played.

Our box score shows the scoring by quarter, but not the detail of how the points were scored. The line listing will show Team Rank and Name, 1st quarter points, 2nd quarter points, 3rd quarter points, 4th quarter points, Total Points

Round One:

Game #1.
#8 BYU, 0, 0, 10, 0 = 10
#9 Southern Miss, 7, 7, 7, 7 = 28

Game #2.

One of the great things about a playoff is that you never know who might win. In round one Southern Miss and Arkansas State upset BYU and West Virginia, earning the opportunity to move ahead to the second round.

Tune in next week for the games of round two, when the matchups will be:

Game #5. #1 Oklahoma State vs #9 Southern Miss
Game #6. #4 Wisconsin vs #12 Arkansas State
Game #7. #2 LSU vs #7 TCU
Game #8. #3 Clemson vs #6 Oregon

The 2011 SAS College Football Playoffs is a BCS Playoff Alternative. It may be fantasy, but it sure beats the current system.

Enjoy the games!
