- Birth Control and period length?
- Q: As a guy with a girlfriend, I have a couple questions regarding birth control. For a woman who is regularly and accurately taking birth control, specifically, a pill that contains both estrogen and progesterone;a.) What is the average length of a period? And by that I mean, the point from which a woman starts menstrual bleeding to the point at which the bleeding ceases, and, b.) When in the cycle should/does that bleeding actually occur? For example, on average, starting on the 25th day of the cycle and ending on the 28th, or starting on the 21st day and ending on the 26th.While I realize that every woman is different, and these questions are partially determined by things other than birth control as well, I'm certain that there are "averages". Thanks!
- A: a). It does depend on the ratio of progesterone to estrogen in the pill, but for the most part, her period should last between 3-5 days (starting bleeding on day 1, ceasing bleeding on day 4 makes a 3 day period the way I count it). Usually the higher the progesterone, the fewer the days, although that can vary woman to woman.b). If she is taking pills with 3 weeks of active pills and 1 week of placebos, she should not get her period until the week of placebos. Her period is triggered by the drop in hormones, so usually by day 2 of placebos (day 23 of the cycle) she should get her period. Again, that's the average and it can vary woman to woman. I personally don't start until day 3 of placebos. On a side note, I would just like to let you know that when counting days in a cycle, it is actually correct to count the first day of bleeding as "Day 1". So in part b). where I answered saying day 23, it's technically not. It's technically day 1 of the new cycle and day 2 of the placebo week. The way they set up birth control pills makes that quite confusing.Like you said, there is variation from woman to woman. The menstrual cycle is something we really don't know a ton about (although it's way cool that we can still manipulate it). I hope I helped!
- spotting during period....does this sound normal?
- Q: Hi everyone....my last menstrual period was a little weird and hopefully some of you can help! My period is normally 30 days in length, but this month it ended up being 34 and I experienced brown spotting one day before (day 33) and bleed lightly for a day and a half and then spotted again for 2 days....is this considered a normal period? My husband and I are trying to conceive and I've taken several pregnancy tests all came out negative. The only thing I can think of is that last month I took an antibiotic for a UTI......what do you think this means?sorry guys....i mean my cycle length is 30 days....i didn't have my period for 30 days straight...it usually lasts for 3-4 days medium flow.
- A: Give it a few more days then take another HPT... or go to the Doctor and have a blood test done.... you could be pregnant.... but not have high enough HCG levels to show up on a HPT... GOOD LUCK!!!
- length of cycle?
- Q: i went to a fertility calculator thingy on this website and it wanted to know my first day of last menstrual period and i put it in then it wanted to know my length of cycle but the lowest one i could chose was 21.....what does that mean because my periods dont last 21 days so what is that?
- A: its not how long your period lasts for its from the first day of your period to the first day of the next period, for eg my periods last for about 6 days and they are every 28 days exactly so my cycle length is 34 days hope this helps and good luck ttc....
