- Q: Every women's vitamin I find has iron in it. It seems like everyone thinks this is a good thing, but I've recently read several articles discussing the dangers of too much iron and suggesting that people only take their multivitamin every other day rather than everyday if it contains iron. Because of this, I've started buying men's multivitamins. I found that they don't contain the iron but do have calcium, zinc, and all of the other things that the women's vitamins have. The iron from food is absorbed much better than the iron from supplements. Even if the amount of iron in a supplement is stated to be 100% of the required daily amount only a portion of that is actually absorbed.Plenty of vitamin C from food or supplements helps to absorb more iron. Without any vitamin C our bodies can not absorb any iron.You can safely take one multivitamin a day with iron in it and it won't give you any iron overload problems.With a heavy menstrual cycle you probably need more iron due to your iron losses even though you have never tested positive for anemia.Because of the menstrual cycle women need more iron than men.
