I have a very weird irregular menstrual cycle, and I really need answers..?
Q: I got my period at a young age of 9. I had regular steady periods until I was about ten years old then it stopped there and instead of getting it monthly my period would skip and be delayed between 2-6 months. It was like this growing up even until now. Anyway, when I was 16 my mom took me to our family doctor and she suggested that I take 'birth control pills' and it should help regulate my period. Well 6 months later my period was still not there! I mean at that time it was great! Who wants to deal with monthly periods..right?? So anyway my mom and I went back to the doctor and I told her what had happened..she diagnosed me with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, and advised me that there is a possibily that I may not conceive later on. It was a devastating news but there was nothing we could do. I was not sexually active so either way it didn't really affect me. Two years later (I was 18 years old) and I had a boyfriend whom I started dating when I was 17, we began becoming sexually active. We were cautious and was using protection and but I wasn't taking the pills anymore. I know it was bad but I still told my mother about (although it wasn't the most precious mother-daughter talk). (Please don't judge) but I never did go on the pill and after graduation my boyfriend and I had unprotected intercourse. I was nervous but nothing happened. From the time I was 18 till I was 20 years old we had intercourse..without protection. I just finished college and he was just finishing college as well when we were surprised by an unexpected pregnancy. We were both kinda shocked but he was going to propose to me anyway so we celebrated. At the age of 21 I had my first child, I couldn't believe that I was able to conceive a child, I was grateful. BUT the period was still very irregular after my son was born. I had a c-section and I bled for 3 weeks then it stopped which my doctor said was normal. The next month I had my period, and the month after that I had another one, and that was in December 2007 and that was when I had my last period. It is now July of 2009 and I am happily married with one child and still no menstrual cycle. I am starting to get very worried that something might be very wrong. I went to see my family doctor and he doesn't think its anything serious, I told him that the birth control pills didn't do anything. Does anyone know anybody with this kind of symptoms or whatever, I'm really looking for someone to be able to give me answers and willing to assess me and tell me what is going on..this has been very frustrating.
A: First, let me tell you that you are not alone. Many women experience irregular periods or times without one entirely. Sadly though, no one clear factor can be listed as a direct cause. Anything from hormone levels, diet, overall health, to stress levels can affect a woman's period or lack thereof. The standard treatment for irregular menstruation is hormone therapy via birth control pills. However, no specific pill is recommended as each individual will respond uniquely to each brand and dosage. If you aren't experiencing any other symptoms (besides stress) then there is no real indication to provide treatment. If you aren't trying for child number two, then use some form of contraception to reduce the risk.I wish there was a clear answer, but unfortunately there really is no such thing as a regular and normal period.
Help on VERY irregular menstrual cycle please?
Q: Hello there! I have a bit of an issue, and was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar, or has any advice to offer.I have not had a period for over six months now, and I am not sure what could cause that. I am eighteen years old, and have never been sexually active. I have experienced no other symptoms. I'm worried though, and have scheduled an appointment with my doctor. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks for reading.
A: You may just have an irregular cycle. Periods can be erratic when you're in your teens. If your doctor finds that that is the case, he or she can prescribe hormonal birth control to keep your periods regular.I'd suggest going to a doctor, but you seem to have that base covered. Good luck. :)
irregular menstrual cycle?
Q: My period was regular for years (every 28-31 days), but now it's all crazy. 3 months ago I got it in 39 days, then 31 days, then this month I haven't gotten it at all! Today is day 34 and I still have all the usual PMS symptoms (cramps, bloated, feeling moistness around the vaginal area) but I have no period. Me and my bf had sex once last month with a condom...and he pulled out. There was no slippage / tearing / or a hole in the condom. We always check for those things after we are done. I haven't done anything different from what I normally do. My diet has stayed the same, I'm not stressed (though I might be soon if my period doesn't come), and I feel fine. Is it normal for a period to be very regular for years and then, all of a sudden, become irregular like mine has for no reason at all? Should I be worried about pregnancy?
A: You might be pregnant take a home pregnancy test.
