Why is my menstrual period blood black?
Q: I usually have dark brown/black blood come on the first and last day of my period but this time it has been the WHOLE period. I've taken a pregnancy test w/a negative result but it is now my 7th day and my period usually only lasts 5-6days w/regular blood in between. I haven't gotten any cramps either. Is there something that could be wrong or should I wait and take another pregnancy test later?
A: Dont worry. I get the same thing too at times. What that is, is Discharge. It is not blood. It can come out brown or a very dark brown to make it look black. Its perfectly normal, and no your not pregnant.

Brown menstrual blood at beginning of period?
Q: I have brown menstrual blood on the first day or two of my period after that it is red for the remainder of my period, this is the third month in a row this has happened? Normally I have red “normal” blood for the entire length of my period. Is this brown blood normal? My husband and I are trying to fall pregnant and I'm concern that for whatever reasons this is happening this could be stopping us from falling pregnant. Also Could this be a symptom of endometriosis? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A: Brownish blood is, simply put, "old" and is very common/normal. It is not a symptom of Endometriosis per se, and occurs frequently in many women at the beginning or end of their cycle. If accompanied by any other symptoms of Endo, including but not limited to, debilitating cramping and pelvic pain at any point in the cycle, infertility/pregnancy loss, the presence of concomitant allergies and/or autoimmune disorder(s) in the patient, pain associated with urination, defecation and/or sexual activity, significant GI symptoms (may be diagnosed simply as "IBS") and more, this would certainly warrant further investigation and diagnosis.Endometriosis, while incurable, is treatable. It is unfortunately a leading cause of female infertility, but with early intervention, diagnosis and adequate treatment, fertility and significant reduction in other symptoms can be achieved. If you are 35 yrs of age or older and have been trying for 6 months or more, OR are under 35 and have been trying for a year or more, consider consulting a reproductive endocrinologist. However - if you have any symptoms of Endo (or a prior history of Endo) whatsoever, consider going straight to an Endo specialist first...proper treatment of the disease can often alleviate the infertility factor.
