PARENTS OF DISABLED/SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS ONLY!?
Q: I was watching the TV show "The Doctors" yesterday and one of the hot topics was about parents of disabled girls giving their daughters medications or having them get hysterectomies in order to stop their daughters' menstrual cycles and to eliminate chances of a pregnancy. So I went online and looked it up and found the story about "Ashley X", whose parents chose to have Ashley's growth stunted so that it would be easier to care for her as she got older. This topic is very controversial, many people believe it shouldn't be done because it takes away a disabled person's "basic human rights". I understand this, and I understand that many people have opinions on this, but like I said in my title, I only want to hear from parents or legal guardians, because unless you constantly live with a child with disabilities, you really don't know how hard it really is!I myself do not have a special needs child, but I have cared for one for the past 3 years and she and her family have become close and we now consider each other family. While I know a lot about her and her care, I would never be able to say I know her as much as her parents. If anything, she is the little sister I never haSO MY QUESTIONS TO YOU, PARENTS AND GUARDIANS:WOULD YOU CONSIDER giving your daughter medications or have her undergo a hysterectomy (in these cases the ovaries stay intact, so she will still produce necessary hormones) to stop her period or from having children?WOULD YOU CONSIDER having her breast buds removed (Ashley X's parents say they did this so Ashley wouldn't have to experience the discomfort of large breasts?WOULD YOU CONSIDER having your son undergo a vasectomy so that he doesn't risk getting someone pregnant?WOULD YOU CONSIDER stunting their growth to make it easier to care for them?IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE, I would also be interested in knowing how low or high functioning you feel your child is, and an approximate age (baby, toddler, preschool, school-age, prepubescent, preteen, or teenager). I just think it would be interesting to see if a child's age/functionality may affect a parent's opinion on the subject. Like I said before, I am not a parent of a special needs child, but I have spent pretty much everyday for the past 3 years caring for her, playing with her, and trying to help her learn. I do have an opinion on this, but I'm going to wait until to the end to express it. I'm really just more interested in hearing what you have to say! Maybe your answer will allow me to see it from another perspective!
A: Why don't you try asking Disabled PEOPLE this too. After all, we have minds and opinions.I am a Disabled 20 year old female. I have Spina Bifida and use a wheelchair at all times when I need to get around.I have a 20 month old daughter and a wonderful Partner. So I think this gives you the answer....NO. To mess with someone else's body, their child or not, should be illegal. What gives anyone the right to enable or disable natural bodily functions because it makes it 'easier' to care for the person??I am extremely angry about this subject. I am a very good mother and have a perfect Toddler. To even think about someone making me infertile without my consent makes me want to cry with anger!
