Can birth control cause depression or mess up your emotions?
Q: I have been using Aviane birth control periods to help keep my menstrual cycle regular, light, and less painful since I was one of those unlucky ones who became violently sick during that time of the month. This will be my fourth month using it starting at 7:00 today. I have had a very good outcome with my cycle; however, since Saturday, August. 29, 2009, which is the day I began the "horemone-less reminder pills," I've felt extremely depressed. I usually feel like I miss my boyfriend while he's at work because he makes me happy when he's around, but I've felt so miserably alone and some what abandoned when he's done nothing, but try to make me happy and comfortable in our relationship which is NOT experiencing any hardships or tramatizing problems. We feel very much in love and happy. Also, all of a sudden, I felt like I didn't even love him anymore. I met with a good male friend of mine and felt like I was beginning to like him! I don't know why because I don't. I had a crush on him long before my boyfriend and I started dating. This caused me to become severely depressed because I love my boyfriend very much and he loves me, but I don't want that to change. We sat down at the park yesterday and talked. I told him everything and he understood. He kissed me a few times and the amazing feeling that used to come from it was gone! I felt like I was hugging and kissing my friend, but I didn't understand why. Of course, this made me feel worse and I began to feel sick to the point of vomitting. After our long talk, which was helpful, I felt 1% better. Slowly, my loving feeling for him came back. The feelings for my friend were not there, but I question if it was just my mind wondering and playing games with me. When we walked back to my house, he held me in his arms and I felt the same feeling I'd felt before this nonsense. I felt the same feeling of love when he kissed me as well. I don't understand how I can go from a few hours of wondering if I still love him, to crying and telling him the feeling is gone and I want it back, to feeling my same intense love for him. I just started the active pill today, so there are higher levels of this hormone in my system. Do you think the lack of this hormone caused my aweful mood swings? This has never happened before, but my doctor did say to expect to feel a bit sick for the first four to six months. This is the FIRST bad experience I've had while on the pills. What do you think?P.S. I feel normal, loving and happy today. This was not present during the week of my reminder pills.
A: Yes, hormones can definitely give you mood swings and mess up your mood. The hormones in them act as neurotransmitters in your brain, and help regulate other neurotransmitters. Progesterone (which is in the pill) can make you depressed, estrogen can make you emotionally excited and angry, testosterone can make you feel sexual desire. That's just a brief summary--the effects are actually very large.
Relating to Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch and Symptoms?
Q: Let me start with the basics:My name is Grissom and I am 16 years old.I am a Junior in high school, and for those who are kind enough to help a very mature minor, I am greatly in your debt.Onto the situation at hand!Over the last year now, I've been having horrific periods. I've been having symptoms occurring between 2-3 weeks at a time, with only 1-2 weeks of relief from them. These symptoms include: Headache, fevers (ranging between 99-103 degrees), diarrhea, clotted/thick and lengthy bleeding, severe changes in appetite and mood, chronic pelvic pain (as well as other pains of abdominal relation), dysmenorrhea (disabling menstrual cramps), dysuria (urinary urgency), extreme lethargy, and sometimes even missing periods.Do not say it is pregnancy, please, because I am not sexually active nor have I ever been. I went to my primary physician for the first time, and he prescribed Ortho Tri-Clyclen Lo for a few months. He assumed it was just a bad hormone imbalance. Well, during those months, I only became increasingly worse with the addition of the low-dosage pill. After growing very weary of not being able to sleep for 2 to 3 nights in a row from pain, I went to a pediatric gynecologist who formally diagnosed me with the common, but unfortunate condition known as Endometriosis. For those who do not know of this condition, it is when abnormal growths of tissue resembling Endometrium (the tissue of the inner membrane of the uterus) are found outside or around the uterine wall which causes all of these symptoms. There is no cure, but it is treatable. The doctor diagnosed me with a fairly advanced state of the disease. In order to stop unnecessary periods (and pain) from occurring, the doctor placed me on Ortho Evra patches for two month intervals and a one week recess for a period to finally occur. Well, no bleeding mid-month or severe cramps have been occurring, which is a great relief. However, to all relief, a bit of stress must be added. I have been having horrible and sudden nausea ever since I started this patch. These nausea spells can last from anywhere between 2 minutes all the way up to 2 days at a time. I have also grown in breast size, which I am not sure is related or not. From the last two months, I have jumped from a 38 B to a 38 C. I don't know these are common symptoms or not, but if they are, please inform me so I can stop worrying about it. And if there are any simple remedies you would wish to share, I'd be very appreciative.Thank you so much for taking your time to read this! I am new to Yahoo! Answers obviously, but I would like to take my time to thank you for your input. I am a vegetarian and nearly vegan, by the way. I eat dairy as little as possible. I was assuming it was symptoms and only that. And it's not bizarre to suggest masturbation if it is a means of relief of frustrating symptoms. My friends have openly admitted to doing it once in a while. Once again, I thank you so much for your relief. I was mainly just checking to make sure I wasn't the only person out there with the same conditions. :)
A: Just from personal experience I know that Ortho Evra did increase my breast size. But there wasn't any nausea or anything. If anything its just a side effect.
What are the chances of me being in labor?
Q: (Thought I'd give this question one more shot....I sent it during the late hours before.)This may be a little long but please help me to understand. I am pregnant with #3. My first two pregnancies were picture perfect and both of them were induced. This one has been picture perfect until a sudden onset of braxton hicks. At 31 weeks, when I went in I was 80% effaced but my cervix was closed.I was given the test to at that point to see if I was in pre-term labor and it came back negative.Later that week, I lost the infamous plug and was put on complete bed rest. Things calmed down some for a while but have started up again.I am now 33.4 weeks pregnant and for the past three days have anywhere from 4 -10 BH per hour from 1 - 3 hours in a row and then it just stops. Last night they lasted throughout the night and into the morning before slowing down. The intensity does not change...it does not hurt and I do not feel any different than I have from the beginning of this process. My doc. said to continue the bed rest and he will see me in two days rather than waiting until next week.I'm just curious if one can actually be in labor without the intensity changing?...or what my chances are at this point for going into pre-term labor. (I have no warning signs and do not participate in any of the things that would cause it....so if it happened, I'd be one of those cases where they don't know the reasons.)I hope this makes sense....I'm just curious...not stressed but want to stay informed. Thanks for your help.Additional DetailsAmazingly, I only felt one contraction between my first two pregnancies before the glorious epidural. With both of them, I didn't receive the epidural until reaching 4 cm....that's why it makes me a little nervous not knowing whether they are just BH or other....so if you have the "menstrual cramps feeling" but it last for 5 minutes or so and then disappears....is that considered a contraction?
A: You may go into pre-term labor if you dont follow your bed rest instructions. However, the contractions should intensify for you to be in serious labor. I've had braxton hicks since 28 weeks, thought I have not dilated or effaced. Just be safe and follow doctors orders. Its too soon to deliver your little one. I've also had the mestrual cramping (in the stomache and back) but no signs of labor yet. Thats just the body preparing so I've been told.
