Does having Bartholin abscess make you miss a period?

Q: I know that I spotted lightly for 2 days and then it stopped completely, then on friday I was shaving and felt a bump… needless to say at first it was like a pea size now its like a little larger than a quarter. Ive read some things online… but you cant always go by what you read on here… I have cut myself before while shaving ( who hasnt) and have never had this type of problems, some websites state that when you are indeed pregnant you get infections… Im just wondering if any of this is right. Im going to try to go to the dr. asap tomm morning. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Thanks!

Bartholin gland removal im scared!?

Q: I went to the doctor today for a bartholin abscess and they told me they want me to have the entire gland removed. Im scared and want to know more about the procedure. What kind of anesthesia will they use? What is the recovery time? Will my husband need to take time off work to help me with my kids? Is it very pain full? What are the negative things that can result from having the procedure (i.e pain numbness lack of lubrication). Please help me i have looked all over the internet and could not find hardly any information on them actually removing the gland only stories about removing the abscess or cyst i need to know specifically about the removal of the gland thank i really appreciate any help i can get.No the procedure that you are speaking of is drainage and inserting a catheter i specificaly asked my doctor about that that is not what they are doing they are doing a bartholin gland excision she has already done the drainage thing today the gland removal will be later i need to know about that thank you for your help though i do appreciate it

A: Hi! I’m from the UK and am recovering from having my left Bartholin Gland totally removed. I’m 36 and have suffered from Bartholin cysts and abcesses since I was 17! It always came in the same spot and I had the same cyst/abcess marsupialized 5 times in hospital! Finally one of the surgeons said they wanted me to be examined when the cyst wasn’t infected to see what could be done about permenantly sorting this recurring problem! So I went to my GP (doctor) who immediately referred me to a specialist gynae consultant who agreed to remove the gland for me.I’m quite suprised they want to remove your gland if you’ve only had this once as it’s generally known as a ‘last resort’ procedure, but maybe your doctor thinks it necessary or better for you? Maybe you could ask why this is necessary when normally they keep on marsupializing a few times first? I don’t know if people in the UK know this, but all patients now have a ‘patient choice’ where you are allowed to choose your consultant and hospital that you want to be treated in. You get a choice of 5 hospitals close to you that perform your surgery and you pick where you want to go. You can review the hospital online and check what feedback it gets from patients and government inspectors! My GP told me which hospital would be best (not my nearest one but one a 20 min journey away) so I went there! I had the surgery 20 days ago and it is still very painful. I’m still not back at work, because it hurts to stand for long periods of time, and it hurts to sit down still. I also have pain if I try to sleep on my sides, but the pain is slowly getting better. Be warned, my consultant told my doctor (who called him to check my swelling of the area was normal) there are 3 things to know about this surgery; total removal of the gland is a very rare procedure, very painful as they have to dig so deep to remove the gland and surrounding tissue and a long recovery to boot! I was given morphine when I was in hospital, and lots of painkillers and antibiotics when I went home (Augmentin antibiotics). One tip you must take a laxative medicine when you get home as the morphine and anaesthetic caused me major problems in that area! I was prescribed 2 spoons of lactulose a day and am still taking it because the surgery and stitches made that aspects of things very painful! 10 days after the operation I developed an infection so I called the hospital again who told me to come straight back in and I was re-admitted as an emergency patient. I have to say they were good-I saw a female consultant gynae who called in the original senior consultant who performed my surgery cause she wanted him to check it as he would know how things were progressing! After 2 days of being on a drip and strong antibiotics I was allowed home and have to see the same consultant again for a check up this week to see how thing are! All in all, I’m very happy with the care I received here in the UK-after all this was free and I know you can pay a fortune in other parts of the world for medical treatment! Never once in all my visits to casualty A&E did any of the doctors not know what my problem was too!The bruises are slowly going, I am still bleeding slightly but am reassured this is normal! A: It’s been a while since I had one, but if it’s just a little lump, I wouldn’t worry too much. And the antib’s will help – not with preventing another formation, but with the infection.I don’t have insurance issues, but I will not go to the doctor if I ever get another one – not until it’s been drained at home, that is. I’ll tell you what I do; you can use your own discretion.First, in order to prevent recurrence (since I’ve had several over the years), I make a point of palpating the area everyday in the shower. Sorry if that sounds gross – but it MIGHT be working, since as I said it’s been well over a year since the last one.If I do get one, I recommend laying in hot water for as long as you can stand. Bring the tv in the bathroom if you have to. When you want to get out, stick a heating pad or other heat (moist is best) between your legs.Be very careful not to burn yourself!When you get tired of that, back into the tub.It may take all day, but chances are that sucker will pop by itself. Once it does, you can drain it yourself, because it no longer hurts. Be ruthless – get out as much as you can.Then clean up and go about your business again. I would go to the doctor at that point, but if you can’t – and if you can’t get any anti-b’s – then just keep the area as clean as possible.
