Does anybody know how you flush out a guttural pouch? my foal has had strangles and its settled in the pouch?
Q: my 8 month old foal has got strangles. Her abscess popped 1 week ago but we have now found out that her guttural pouch has stuff in it and they are saying that she will either need an operation or they can flush it out. What do they mean by this? It sounds gross!!
A: Ask your Vet.The Merck Veterinary ManualCynthia M. Kahn and Scott Line Merck; 9 edition; 2005Pg 1212STRANGLESTreatment: The environment for clinically ill horses should be warm, dry, and dustfree, Warm compresses are applied to sites of lymphadenopathy to facilitate maturation of abscesses. Facilitated drainage of mature abscesses will speed recovery. Ruptured abscesses should be flushed with dilute (3-5%) povidone-iodine solution for several days until discharge ceases. ……http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=7996Flush: (2) Flush also means to wash out a wound or body area.
Guinea-Pig has an abscess on her jaw/tooth please help :(?
Q: Hello everyone who owns or knows a little bit about guinea pigs :)I was holding my guinea pig Fudge the other day when i noticed a strange lump on the side of her cheek. I had also noticed that she was not eating and was not as playful as usual. That afternoon we took her to the vets and they examined her and said that she had an abscess either on her tooth or jaw bone(The vet could not see inside her mouth as she squeaked to much!) Anyway,They gave us some antibiotics and some Anti-Infalmetories for her to be given through a syringe and said if shes not eating by the end of the week bring her back and they will put her under anesthetic and examine her properly.Im really worried about her especially as her weight is slowly dropping. If i take her back to the vets what do you think they will do to her? ThanksAlso, I have separated her from her sister for the time being so the other one does not bully Fudge. Was this the right thing to do?or was it a bit mean?
A: If she is not eating well, you must supplement her diet by syringe feeding her: get some Oxbow critical care or Supreme Science Recovery (needs vitamin C added) or mix her usual pellets with water and feed the mix to her in a syringe. She should take about half a ml in a mouthful and 5 – 10ml in a sitting. Guinea pigs can go into liver failure after 16 hours without food.Is your vet an exotics vet? If not, ask if they can refer you to one who is. The vet should use an otoscope for examining the mouth (really meant for ears, but OK for piggies’ mouths). If little Fudge needs surgery to deal with the abscess, ask if she can have isoflurane with oxygen as the anaesthetic mix rather than domitor or valium or some other injectable mix. The reason is that they have a better chance of recovery from a gas anaesthetic than an injectable one. She will also need to be closely monitored in the first few days after the surgery to ensure that she is producing poos; if not, she may need a shot of metocloprimide to stimulate the gut, because if the gut stops working (GI stasis) this can kill.Better to separate her from her sister so that you can monitor what she is eating and whether she is producing poos. Also you don’t want her sister to lick the area after the surgery. If she needs surgery they will drain the abscess and possibly put a stitch in to keep the wound open so that any further pus can drain, rather than let the wound heal and more pus develop underneath.Well done for noticing something was wrong and doing something about it straight away; you need to continue to be vigilant. If she is dropping weight by more than 10-20g a day take her back sooner, because you don’t want her to be to weak to withstand surgery. She is likely to need surgery for an abscess.Good luck!
Can any dentist out there help me out? Abscessed tooth!!!?
Q: Okay, so I know I should go in to see my dentist but he cannot see me for another 10 days!!! so …. I’m asking here. I have an abscessed tooth…I’ve actually had it for a long time now, and was supposed to get a root canal, but waited because I was pregnant. Now that I have delivered…I am going to get the root canal done (when my dentist is back)..but in the mean time, I have an abscess and I see yellow, smelly pus come out when I apply pressure. I need to know what antibiotic i should be taking…especially considering I am breast feeding. i don’t want to wait 10 days to start taking meds….plus, if i come in with the abscess, he is just going to send me home with antibioticsand wait til its gone to do the root canal. I’d rather be done with the abscess by the time he gets back. Thank you!!
A: You could call around to other dental offices and see if they can see on for an emergency appointment. The dentist I work for usually prescribes penicillin (for patients allergic to PCN, he’ll usually prescribe Amoxicillin or Clyndamycin) however because you’re breast-feeding, he may prescribe something else. Be sure to tell him that you’re breast feeding. If you’re swollen, especially out into your cheek, into your eye or to the point where it hard to breathe or swallow – GO TO THE ER!
