What actually happens when you lose your voice?
Q: I have just recently (this morning) lost my voice—basically, I can manage some pretty awful sounds—and I wasn’t yelling or screaming. In fact, I have had a sore throat since yesterday and I was surprised to wake and find my voice in its present condition. I already know remedies for getting my voice back, but this has really captured my interest. I read that you can literally lose your voice, but how exactly does it happen?
A: You start to sound a little bit like Carol Channing – depending on the circumstances, it may or may not hurt to talk – i know this because I tend to lose my voice whenever I stay away from home, it’s a climate thing. It’s really just something settling in your throat – phlegm will eventually flush it out, but it’ll accumulate in your throat first, trust me. I’d say go for very hot tea with honey or very cold water with ice, or a mixture of both throughout the day. Literally losing your voice is pretty scary – but it doesn’t last forever. At the most, a day or two. If that happens, just relax your vocal chords for a while, they’ll start to feel better. Don’t try talking or strain yourself to make your voice heard.
How do you lose your voice in rapid time?
Q: I’ve got one night to completely lose my voice. I know it’s terrible for your voice but this is a one and only time.
A: Wow, please tell me why. I’m dying of curiosity! Go somewhere where you won’t be heard and scream your lungs out. Scream and scream. Also, when your throat is kind of burning, drink some lemon juice. After these initial steps, don’t let your throat rest. Keep talking, singing, and yelling if you can. If you can’t be secluded somewhere, sing REALLY loud along with something for a long time. If you don’t sleep enough tonight after this, you’ll be set.

Q: How and why do you lose your voice? I was just wondering. Thanks in advance.
A: I lost my voice a few times from screaming and having to talk loud at concerts. It was too much strain on my vocal cords. You can loose it by being sick too.
