Do you need perfect unaided vision to be a fighter pilot in the RAF?
Q: I really want to be a fighter pilot after leaving Uni. For years I have been working on my fitness, leadership skills, IQ, qualifications, and joined the Air Cadets in my youth. However within the last couple of years (I am now 21 and due to graduate in June) I had had to wear glasses whilst driving due to very mild short-sightedness…are my chances of being a fighter pilor now completely scuppered? I just want an honest answer from people in the know, because if there is no chance I can make it I’d rather not try than having my heart broken and confidence dashed having gone through all the hassle of applying. I’m prepared to take it on the chin if this is the case- it’ll just be such a shame to waste all that prep work I’ve been putting muself through…I was so devoted! Any serious help welcome- thanks!
A: I heard that pilots in the RAF have to be at near perfect physical condition to be able to join. Im pretty sure that a major consideration would be eyesight and that proberly means a perfect 20/20. my dad is a bus driver and you should hear the hassle he has for wearing glasses when he drives so u can imagine when the MOD send you up in a plane that costs something like a million quid.
What do i have to do to become a fighter pilot in the navy or marines (not air force)?
Q: I’m a senior in a navy ROTC high school in Delaware and i have a couple questions on how to become a fighter pilot. im 5-10 145 with perfect vision and an asvab score of 89 but a cum gpa of 1.75.do i need to go to college? What degree do i need to get?how likely is it that i get a fighter jet?is flight school really hard?and any other info you could give me would be greatly appreciated. i’m meeting a marine recruiter tomorrow but i know how they would say anything to get me to join so i’d rather get information from a former marine or seaman or pilot
A: The process of becoming a Marine pilot is arduous and competitive. Here are some of the hurdles prospective pilots have to clear: Pilots need at least a bachelor’s degree, earned either at a civilian college or university or through the U.S. Naval Academy, as the Marine Corps does not have its own service academy. What is it like to be a transport pilot in the U.S. Air Force?
Q: I’ve seen some of the huge planes the pilots get to fly, and I’ve heard that to be a fighter pilot (which I don’t want to do) you need 20/20 uncorrected; but to be a transport pilot you just need 20/20 correctable. I don’t have 20/20 vision but I wear contacts that make my vision perfect.Would I be able to be a transport pilot? Is it worth it?Do you get to travel a lot?I appreciate any answers!
A: What you heard is correct — fighter pilots have to have perfect 20/20 vision, but transport pilots only have to have vision correctable to 20/20. However, you also have to have full depth perception and full color vision, so any other vision problems you may have are an automatic disqualifier. Here’s the formula for becoming a transport pilot:(1) Do your best in school(2) Stay out of trouble with the law(3) Don’t do drugs — one drug use and you’re out(4) Get in shape or stay in shape if you’re already in good physical condition(5) Get involved in your community(6) Apply for the Air Force Academy or apply for an ROTC program through a college or university you would like to attend, but make sure it’s an Air Force ROTC program (only the Air Force has transport planes)(7) Realize that pilot slots are fiercely competed for, so you may not be able to get one no matter how hard you try or how well you do in school — bear in mind, however, they are trying to recruit more female pilots, so you may have a leg up if you meet the requirements.Yes, transport pilots travel a lot, but they also travel to places like Iraq or Afghanistan, and the Taliban and al-Qaeda like to shoot at transport planes because they’re bigger and slower than fighters. Most of the transport pilots I know love the job and love to travel though, so it’s all good there.
