Need Taming Tips for Timid Young Adult Rabbit?

Q: I am a first-time rabbit owner in need of a little advice from voices of experience.I own an un-altered mini rex doe who is about six months old, and has become very timid and defensive towards me. When I first adopted her (she was given to me because she was bred for show, but her mother chewed off all her back toes, a couple front toes, and half her tail; and she would have been euthanized. I doubt this has much to do with her behavior now but I figure more info is better) I left her in her cage and occasionally put my hand in and stroked her on the top and sides of her face. I also made sure I said her name and talked to her a lot so she could learn to recognize my voice. After about a week I would take her out of her cage (which is on top of my dresser) and put her on my bed to get some exercise. I did not put her on the floor because there are many electrical cords in my room and I did not want to risk her being electrocuted; besides, she never showed any inclination to leave the bed. Originally she would run around quite energetically and seemed comfortable with being touched and held, but slowly she took to just burrowing under the sheets and hiding there. In her cage whenever the door is open, she is generally either sitting in her litter pan or nest box, and will jump and grunt at my hands if I move them too close by. She has occasionally nipped my fingers when I try to move her to clean and such, in which case I placed my fingers behind her head and pushed it down gently but firmly, as I have been told is the proper way to discipline a rabbit. I can usually stroke her or pick her up but in both cases she becomes very tense and still. I bought some yogurt drops about a week ago to offer when I enter the cage, but she’s been too wary of me to eat them (except one).I think her mistrust stems from the fact that for a short while when she started to act timid, I would lift her nest box up to get her, in the hopes that she would get used to me more quickly. I have read that this is a bad idea, but the rabbit we kept in our pre-veterinary class often had this happen, and she (also an un-altered female) matured into a very confident and pleasant rabbit. I’m guessing this was a huge mistake on my part, though.My other dilemma is that since her cage is on my dresser, I can’t just open the door to let her come out when she feels comfortable. Should I relocate the cage to the floor (drafty?) and block off the electric cords? Put her on the bed then move the cage? Move the cage with her in it? Build a ramp?She’s an adorable little girl and I want her to be healthy and happy while I own her, which certainly isn’t happening at the moment. A: It sounds like she could use some time to adjust, everything you are trying is great. One thing it could be is lack of good solid exercise. You really need to let her down on the floor to roam. This will help her get used to her surroundings and relax. Q: Here’s an a piece:It’s so strange how your life can be altered so simply just like a hem of a dress. Getting shorter and shorter until your left with nothing but a worthless scrap of fabric. Now I was a victim of the altering left with nothing but a sore heart and a headache from all of the tears. I jammed a pair of old jeans in my turquoise canvas suitcase then closed it shut. The faint sound of drizzling raindrops snapped against the floor to ceiling windows that covered one of my four bedroom walls. I inhaled the familiar vanilla scent that had wafted in my room since I was little. Still breathing it in for my last moments of living here, I turned to my older sister. She was sitting Indian style on my bear mattress staring at the rain, while tears crawled down her cheek. Her long dirty blonde hair flowed like water down her back. Natural curls covered her head. I had the same but mine were chocolate brown and a lot less refined. She had just turned fifteen and would be a sophomore when we returned to school in the fall. She was my best friend in the world, simple as that. When she caught me looking at her she quickly wiped the away the tears with the back of her arm. She fumbled for the playing cards scattered around her and stacked them into a neat deck quickly. “Pick a card, any card!” She said changing the subject while fanning out the cards revealing only their navy side.
