Workouts You Can Do With 5-Pound Dumbbells

Contrary to what you might have heard, you don’t always need heavy weights to get a good workout. Sometimes just a pair of 5-pound dumbbells can provide you with more than enough resistance for your workout. It just depends on the type of workout you’re doing. If you have a pair of 5-pound dumbbells sitting around collecting dust, you can get some use out of them by trying one of these workouts.

Warming Up

The first thing you can do with your dumbbells is a warm up. Lifting a light pair of dumbbells is a great way to warm up for a heavier weight lifting workout. All you have to do is one set of each of the exercises you plan on doing with your dumbbells before you get started. This will raise your body temperature and get your blood flowing so you’re nice and loose before you begin your workout.

Supersets

Completing two or more similar exercises in row without any rest is a superset. Supersets are a great way to strength train when you’re using a light weight like a pair of 5-pound dumbbells. An example of a super set would be doing one set of bicep curls, followed by one set of shoulder presses, followed by one least set of reverse curls.

Cardio

Doing any kind of cardio exercise while holding a pair of 5-pound dumbbells will seriously increase the intensity of your cardio workout. Something as simple as a light jog can quickly become an intense cardio workout when you do while carrying an extra 10 lb. I know that doesn’t sound like much weight, but keep in mind your arms are working almost as hard as your legs when you incorporate dumbbells. 5-pound dumbbells are great for these kind of workouts because anymore weight than that would become dangerous.

Cooling Down

Lastly, you can use your 5 lb dumbbells to cool down after a strength training or cardio workout the same way you would use them to warm up: simply doing a few sets of weight lifting exercises to ease out of your body out of workout mode.
