Working for Yourself Review

-This book is an excellent resource to have if you intend to go into business for yourself. It covers a vast array of what you will run into when you do decide to become an independent contractor or freelancer. This book is intended is for people providing services like a doctor as opposed to providing goods like electronics.

-In the first chapter the different types of business formations are discussed. You can can choose from different formations such as a sole proprietorship or a limited liability company. Working for Yourself also discusses choosing and protecting your business name. Even more important in this chapter it discusses how to choose an domain name for your website. In addition to getting a website and domain name, another chapter is dedicated to obtaining business permits and business licenses. It is important to get business licenses or business permits because you can be fined or even put out of business if you don’t comply with the law. Sales tax permits are also brought up. These are needed primarily for selling goods but it is needed with particular service businesses.

When one sets out to do business you need insurance along with service permits. This book has an excellent chapter on insurance. It discusses health insurance and HSAs. HSAs are a wise choice for healthy people without too many medical problems otherwise HSAs may not be a wise choice for you (according to his book). Along with health insurance Working for Yourself includes how to get paid for your services. This book also describes when you should go to court and when you should use a collection agency.
