Why Steve Womack Deserves Re-Election in 2012

COMMENTARY | Congressman, Steve Womack is the Republican representative for District 3 in Arkansas. Usually, I am opposed to voting for republicans because of their recent efforts, or lack thereof, but Womack deserves to be re-elected in 2012. The following reasons are why:

Our Country’s Debt

On Sept. 19, Womack released a statement, about the president’s latest speech on the nation’s debt that basically states he thinks raising taxes is not the solution to our problems. Also, he believes our government should be held accountable for our nation’s debt. He goes to say, “Throwing money at a problem every time one arises is not good policy, it’s not a sustainable policy, and it’s a policy which has never worked. Our country needs long-term solutions or we will continue to see these problems over and over again.” Now, who couldn’t agree with that statement?

Balanced Budget Amendment

On Nov. 18, Congress voted on a Balanced Budget Amendment. This amendment would make our government balance their budgets every year, just like they voted to make our states do. Also, it would hold the government accountable for their past, present, and future spending. However, even though they have required all of the states to balance their budgets each year, they did not vote in this amendment. Most of the Republican Party were against this amendment, but Womack was one of the people who wanted it enforced. He, along with other Arkansas representatives, voted for this amendment to pass and they were “disappointed” that it failed to do so.

Free Trade Bill

Finally, our government has done something right. It has voted on a Free Trade Bill that allows us to have free trade agreements with South Korea, Columbia, and Panama. Members of Congress estimate this will “boost our exports by more than $13 billion a year.” Womack supported this bill and was very pleased that it was allowed to pass.

I highly believe actions speak louder than words. Many politicians make promise after promise, but like a certain president that I will not name, they never deliver. Womack has made promises and he’s kept them. He is truly trying to make a difference. Because of congressman like him, I strongly believe that our county has a chance for a better future. It may not happen for my generation, but I hope that maybe our once great country will be mended for my daughter’s generation.
