Why I Love Unmasking Night–Poem Based on a Picture

It is quiet.
No one to ask me to scream.
Just me and my heart.
No loneliness. No pain.
The solid strength of Earth.
Mother has left me here. To imagine.
There are stars. Rockets to escape.
Someday I will make her pay.

The walls have no fists.
I can draw with my fingers.
Loving your warmth against me.
We will stop this for eternity.
But we are just two.
Me and my heart.
Hungering for love.

I feel your strength. Love the play
of escape, of silence, of touch
so many giggles, so many creatures
come to my hand, come to your hand.
I would give you all that, the future
the night lands, the creatures
the rockets, the protection from hurt

except you took your knife
cut my throat, believing me your mother
instead of being alone with my heart
the crying plundered Earth
the coins slipping through your fingers
for the snort of unhealthy alliance
to enliven the night.
