Why I Love My $99 Archos 28 Internet Tablet

$99? Did I read that right?

Those were the thoughts that went through my head as I looked at the display box for the Archos 28 touchscreen Android.

Do you mean that for less than $100 I can have another way to use the net?

That was my big goal.

This tablet fits in the palm of my hand and weighs less than a pound. According to the product description: ” Android is the application framework developed by Google for connected mobile devices, coming stock with a full pack of connected apps, such as a web browser and email application. The five home screens of the Android user interface allow for advanced personalization: icons can be placed, moved or erased with just a flick of a finger.”

With three little girls and a wife in our house, it is a welcome addition to our two laptops. Our computers find themselves outnumbered by people who want to be on the net at the same time for various reasons. The unit has a smooth user interface, 3D graphical accelerator and WiFi connectivity. Its 2.8-inch, 16-million-color TFT touchscreen LCD has a QVGA 320 x 240 pixel resolution.

My Archos 28 has become like a dear friend, with its pre-installed apps for instant use, including chat, email, online music, as well as the widest support of video and music formats. I can download 3D games and applications via the AppsLib store.

Fortunately, I haven’t needed any downloads. When my wife and I are banging away on our two laptops, and my eight year old is begging me to play an online game, I not only get to hand her the android, but it plugs into my laptop and she gets to enjoy sitting next to daddy while she plays.

This tiny tool holds a four GB capacity for about 4,000 songs, 80,000 photos, or seven full-length movies. 16 hours of audio, four hours of video, or six hours web browsing can be done on a single charge. For our pictures, it works with MPEG-4, H.264, WMV/VC1, Motion JPEG, and MPEG-2 video codecs. And we can get sound through MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, OGG Vorbis, FLAC, and AC3 audio formats.

Tip: Amazon has them on sale for $79.99 with free shipping. For the penny pinching techie, this is the unit. I bought mine at KMart, and it has a one-year limited warranty.
