Volunteerism is a great asset to the stability, growth and development of every community. In addition to filling social and educational needs, volunteerism can provide personal enrichment, improve socialization and build community pride.

Tutoring
Read Muskegon is a not-for-profit program created to improve adult literacy throughout the Muskegon community. Presently, the agency is in need of volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing and comprehension. Volunteers can commit as little as a couple of hours a week, or as much as several hours a week to the program. Home Building
Muskegon’s Habitat for Humanity is in need of volunteers to assist them in their endeavors to provide homeowner opportunities to low income families. Skilled laborers such as carpenters, plumbers, painters roofers and electricians are needed to help in the actual building of homes. Additionally, support volunteers are needed in areas of administration, fund raising and program coordination. This is a wonderful opportunity for cultural, religious or social groups to work together as a team of volunteers. The American Red Cross
The Muskegon office of the American Red Cross is also in need of community volunteers. The most common volunteer opportunities involve coordinating and assisting in area blood drives. Nevertheless, the American Red Cross offers other opportunities as well. One such opportunity is that of senior transportation driver. In this capacity, drivers will use an American Red Cross vehicle to transport senior citizens to and from medical appointments such as check-ups and dialysis. Additionally, individuals with clerical skills such as word processing, bookkeeping and data entry may also utilize their talents helping out in the front or back offices.
