Use Vintage Restaurant Ware to go Green in 2012

My geen New Years resolution is to only use vintage restaurant ware as they are durable and multi functional and never require replacing.

If you look in any store that sells dishes, glasses, bowls etc. it is quite obvious that most of them are poorly made and designed to last a short period of time so you go out every few years and by new. Far too many of them are made in China which is ruining our economy but that is a story for another day. Having products like this that are designed to be disposable means more garbage which is not good as we have enough to take care of already. You could also go the paper or plastic route but that has its flaws as well. They can be recycled but we have enough to recycle already. Furthermore, too many people don’t bother to recycle and put it in the regular garbage anyway.

Vintage restaurant ware is the way to go. The ware is vitrified which basically means it is highly durable and will last forever. You can attain all types such as plates, platters, bowls, coffee cups and more. There are many examples in my own kitchen that are over fifty years old and used on a regular basis and still do the job better than any plate you can buy today. You can also keep your leftovers on them and go straight from the fridge to a hot oven with no fear of cracking which will encourage people not to waste food. Unless you roughly drop them or throw them they rarely crack or chip and will give you many years of use so you don’t have to bog down the planet with wasted disposable garbage. Look for brands such as Buffalo and Syracuse although there are several more. Most of these are quality made in the good old United States of America and will last you a lifetime.

So remember our planet on New Years when you make your resolution. And if you haven’t thought of one yet using vintage restaurant ware is a pretty good way to go.
