Traits of a Chihuahua-Manchester Terrier Mix

Breed specific traits have developed out of centuries of selective breeding. In mixed breed dogs any possible combination of the physical or temperament characteristics of every breed involved may occur. To determine if a mix might be appropriate for your lifestyle you should research all the traits of the various breeds involved. For a Chihuahua Manchester Terrier mix you need to look at all the characteristics of both these breeds.

Chihuahuas are toy breed dogs notable for their extremely small size, ranging from 2-6 pounds in weight and 6-9 inches in height. They can have both short or long coats. The coats can be any color or combination of colors. Chihuahuas have long bodies and an apple shaped face with large round eyes and large ears. The ears stand upright and are pointed in shape. Their muzzle is short and slightly pointed as well.

Chihuahuas are loving and attentive to their owners. They are also generally very self-assured, confident, and cocky. These characteristics combine to make them very protective, assertive, tenacious, and possibly aggressive. Concerns about this temperament are often minimized because of their small size, but it should not be taken lightly. They are not likely to tolerate teasing from small children or rough play. They are also unaware of their own size in confrontations with other dogs.

Manchester Terriers come in two varieties, the Toy and the Standard. Toys weigh up to 12 pounds and are around 10 inches in height while Standard Manchester Terriers weigh between 12 and 22 pounds and are around 15 inches tall. Their coat is short and sleek and a combination of black and tan. Their body is slightly longer than their height. They have a sharp expression with dark almond shaped eyes, a long narrow head, and a pointed upright ear that is sometimes cropped.

Manchester Terriers should have a steady even temperament. They are patient and generally get along with other breeds of dogs. Since they are a terrier they can be tenacious and very independent. They may be protective. They were bred to hunt rats and other rodents and the breed still maintains this abilities and traits. An activity like Earthdog, a training and competition program geared specifically toward breeds like this, would be an excellent outlet for these natural tendencies.

A Chihuahua-Manchester Terrier mix may be as small as a chihuahua or as large as a Standard Manchester Terrier, or anywhere in between. It will likely be tenacious and stubborn, but it also may inherit either the over-protective nature of the Chihuahua or the calmer nature of the Manchester Terrier. The ears will likely be pointed and upright, the body long, and the muzzle pointed. Any color and coat type from smooth and short to long is possible.
