TNA Impact Wrestling Review of 9/8/11 Show

Tonight’s TNA Impact Wrestling was one that offered much promise, right out of the gates. It started with a promo showing Jeff Hardy. It should be very interesting to see where that goes. More on it later. Then we got a recap of last week’s match between Sting and Kurt Angle. It sets up tonight’s action quite nicely. On with the show.

1) Mr. Anderson in ring. Love Mr. Anderson. He is the single greatest talent that TNA/Impact wrestling has right now that is under the age of 40. When Sting came out (arguably the best wrestler of the past 20 years), it gave hope for the new crazy Sting/Joker persona. I love Sting, but I’m not entirely sold on the Joker character of his. He does it well, but…I don’t know. I prefer the Sting of WCW who was The Crow and was silent. Mr. Anderson is the one wrestler who add a new dimension to Sting. Should be interesting to see what develops here.

2) D’Von + The Pope vs. The British Invasion. OK, first off, I cannot root for The British Invasion since they are a watered down carbon copy of one of my favorite tag teams of all-time – The British Bulldogs. So, boo. But I also don’t care for the angle TNA is spinning with D’Von & The Pop and the family business. Don’t involve wives and children. Don’t like it. I was rooting for a double disqualification. Or for Mr. Anderson to invade. That would be great if Kenny and Sting just interrupted every match and annihilated the wrestlers. But it won’t happen.

Winners – D’Von + The Pope

3) Immortal (Bully Ray & Gunner) + Beer Money in ring. Bully Ray is great on the microphone. He makes the crowd hate him. That’s the sign of greatness. He plays the egomaniac so well. And he can back it up. Love his confidence. Found it interesting when he knocked D’Von. Not a big fan of Beer Money. I did like how James Storm kind of resembled an old school Macho Man Randy Savage though. Bobby Roode? Not as great on the mic. Keep working on it. I liked how Gunner was silent. Silent always works in wrestling. Always.

4) Eric Young (TV Champ) vs. Robbie E. Eric Young makes wrestling fun again. He is a throwback to the George ‘The Animal’ Steele days (just less hairy). His ‘feud’ with Scott Baio was priceless. They should have Eric in Hollywood as a regular segment. I don’t care for the Robbie E./Jersey Shore angle at all. At all. At all. The Jersey Shore is the most embarrassing thing on television and that includes even American Idol. Eric Young should hold every title in TNA simultaneously; including the Knockouts Championship (female title). EY is great. Love him. Loved his GTW trunks, too. Not cool when Steroid Snooki attacked post-match.

Winner – Eric Young (and all fans of wrestling!)

5) RVD + Jerry Lynn in locker room. Jerry – you need to get a cool persona to be on the same level as RVD.

6) Velvet Sky + Mickie James + Karen Jarrett in locker room. Hot. When Velvet held the belt around her waist…best belt shot ever! And Velvet doesn’t need to lose any weight, Karen.

7) Kurt Angle (Heavyweight Champion) vs. Mr. Anderson. Title defense with Sting as special enforcer. Whenever a Heavyweight Title Match is not the finale of a show it means that something great, not good, is going to happen later. A lesser wrestler would make Mr. Anderson’s ring/mic entrance come across as silly and lame. He rocks it. I love Sting and Anderson but Sting shouldn’t have pulled the ref out of the ring. It was all fair so far. Then Gunner and Immortal run in. DQ.

Winner – Mr. Anderson (by DQ so no title change)

8) Eric Bischoff backstage. Prank call? Hmmm…

9) Winter + Angelina Love vs. Mickie James + Velvet Sky. Winter and Angelina are the sexiest tag team since The Moondogs. I love the Winter mind control angle more than anything in wrestling at this point. Winter = Best theme song in TNA. Mickie James = Worst theme song in TNA. I am totally in the Winter & Angelina corner. Best tag team in wrestling. The Knockouts matches are almost always more fun to watch than the guys matches (not just because they are hot). Loved how Angelina went old school Great Kabuki with the red liquid spit. Don’t care if it wasn’t fair. It was fun. And give the Knockouts Title back to Winter!

Winners – Winter + Angelina Love

10) Austin Aries + Brian Kendrick in ring. What’s with the suit Brian? Oh. Kendrick is another of the best young talents in TNA. Love his peculiar riddley way of talking. I love when he speaks in intelligent rhythm and rhyme ways. Buddha rules! The look on Aries’ face was priceless. Kendrick is the Leaping Lanny Poffo of the 21st century. He is so cool and seems like the guy who’d be most fun to hang out with of all the TNA wrestlers. Materialism stinks! The Kendrick/Aries angle is pure gold.

11) Hogan + Bischoff backstage. Hogan getting his toes tan is a great line. Enough enough enough with using ‘The Network’ as an excuse for matches or actions. It is lame. It is so yesterday. No more ‘The Network’. You are better than that Bischoff. Write a new line.

12) Bully Ray + Gunner vs. Beer Money (Four Corners Tornado Match). Samoa Joe and Matt ‘Don’t Call Me Goldberg’ Morgan invade before the bell sounds. They were stopped by the security that be. Then all four in-match wrestler beat the stuffing out of each other. Then Gunner pins Bully Ray?! Interesting. Bully Ray will not be happy about this. Can’t wait for the rant. Gunner – your ears are in for a verbal kicking.

Winner – Gunner

13) The Return of Jeff Hardy. (Now we need Matt.) He looked troubled. Looked like he was going to seriously start crying. Also kind of looked like Chris Benoit. Ouch. He wants his one more shot. OK. You will get it. This whole segment was very brief and seemed sincere. Did not feel like an act. Also, was hoping to hear him call out The Great Northern Vince.

The End.
