Tips to Prolong the Life of Your Spray Tan

Sunless tanning is an idea option for individuals who want to avoid exposure to harmful UV rays from tanning beds or the sun. Spray tanning has become a popular method of obtaining a youthful glow with the benefits of safety and convenience. While somewhat costly, it is very quick – lasting only minutes from start to finish. On average, spray tans can last between 5 and 10 days, typically 7 days. Spray tans can be prolonged with the proper preparation and maintenance techniques. Consider the following tips to make your spray tan last longer.

Pat skin dry after showering instead of rubbing. For several days following your spray tan, apply a light-weight moisturizer to keep skin hydrated. Avoid the use of heavy creams and lotions. Avoid the use of hot tubs or swimming pools for extended periods of time. Long exposure to chlorine can gradually bleach the skin, thus prematurely lightening the spray tan. Exfoliate the body starting approximately four days after the initial spray tan. Use a set of exfoliation gloves to allow the color to fade more evenly. Apply a gradual tanning lotion to the body twice a day to extend the life of your spray tan. This technique will help the color stay a few extra days. Give the spray tan application a minimum of 10 full minutes of drying time before putting back on your clothing. Stand in front of a fan and try to keep your body cool during this time. The DHA takes approximately 12 hours to reach its maximum color. Hold off on bathing, showering or swimming during this period. Take shorter showers or baths to extend the life of your spray tan. Avoid using exfoliating products and bar soaps. Shaving frequently also acts as an exfoliating tool. Wear loose-fitting clothing immediately after the spray tanning session. Put on a pair of flip-flops or sandals instead of shoes and socks. Shave, shower and exfoliate approximately 24 hours prior to your spray tan appointment. This will help prepare your skin for maximum absorption. Avoid the use of moisturizers, lotions and deodorants before getting a spray tan. These products can make it difficult for your skin to fully absorb the color. Use a skin primer instead for an even tan. Drink plenty of water before and after getting a tan. This will keep your skin hydrated and enhance the overall appearance of the tan.
