The Emmy Awards 2011: Best and Worst Moments

The Emmy awards are supposed to present the best in television, however, sometimes the show is not always the best tribute to the amazing talent that as out there. Luckily this year the telecast showed some life to it, with host Jane Lynch (“Glee”) making the most of the time and material she was given. Not every bit soared, but luckily there were some truly great moments that kept things from being a complete waste of time. Here is a looks at some of the best and worst moments of the 2011 Emmy Awards show.

Best Part of the Opening Number: Host Jane Lynch takes on the men and women of “Mad Men,” even giving Peggy a little special attention.

Worst Idea: The Emmy Tones Although they might have been comprised of some really talented people (including the always great Joel McHale), but the bit fell flat every time they open their mouths. Not even the smooth stylings of LL Cool J could make it work.

Best Joke: Jane Lynch reads from her Gay agenda, which includes calling Rachel Maddow and getting an oil change.

Next Best Joke: Nathan Fillion stating that his black friends call him “White Castle.”

Best Presenters: Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel engage in an on set struggle over Fallon’s speech, providing one of the best moments of the night, and certainly the best among the presenters.

Biggest Huh: A rather normal looking Charlie Sheen arrives to present the Best Actor in a Comedy award, and appears to be set to make a tirade against his former employers. However, he instead wishes them the best year possible. It was an awkward moment, but only because people were probably expecting more.

The Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time Award: Andy Samberg’s digital shorts may get great laughs on “Saturday Night Live,” however on a live stage they seem to lose a bit of their hilarity. Fortunately for Samberg and the Lonely Island guys, Michael Bolton and William H. Macy helped keep the bit from completely self-destructing.

Best Reaction: Steve Levitan’s wife shows why they are the real life Phil and Claire by brilliantly playing to the camera every time her husband makes a reference to her.

Best Speech: “Modern Family’s” Ty Burrell gives a heartfelt speech that is spiked with dry humor. Best Line: “Why do you have to look like a harlot?”

Second Best Speech: “Justified’s” Margo Martindale declares that “Sometimes dreams just take time,” and goes on to show that hard work and determination will always pay off.

Best Scripted Bit: “The Office Spoof,” which showcased a confused Cee Lo Green struggling with his chair, as well as “Breaking Bad’s” Aaron Paul selling some Crystal Meth to “The Office” crew.

Best Overall Moment: All the nominees in the Best Lead Actress in a Comedy series jump on stage in true beauty pageant style as their names are called out. The seemingly spontaneous nature made it fun, however even the revelation that it might have been planned all along did not deflate any of the air from these winning personalities.
