Parents who get tattoos might be interested in learning about some creative ways to get a tattoo that reflects how they feel about their children. A good portion of parents will simply tattoo their child’s name on them, but others will get more creative about it. Tattooing is a form of art, so there is a lot of freedom that comes with creating a tattoo that represents your child. Keep in mind that where you put the tattoo may be just as significant as what the tattoo actually is. Look below for some current trends involving parents and tattoos.
Use footprints. Many parents will take a copy of their child’s footprint to a tattoo artist and have it placed on their body. If you have more than one child, you can do this in a chain or make the footprints look as if they are walking somewhere, like to your heart.
Portraits are in style. I’ve seen a great deal of people ask for tattoos of portraits of their children. It’s a talented ink artist that can tattoo a portrait on a parent. First he or she has to draw the portrait, whether it’s for a sitting or from a photograph. Then they have to be able to capture the portrait on skin, something that requires its own special talent.
Use a symbol. If your child has a nickname or totem, you might prefer to have a symbol of the nickname or totem tattooed on you. This is an especially easy answer when the nickname or totem involves animals since you can always have the animal tattooed on you. You might also consider a symbol from an ancient culture or different language.
Get creative with the name. I originally had my son’s name on my back, directly over a symbol. But, the symbol wasn’t the way I wanted it so I had to have it, along with my son’s name, covered up. I still wanted to get a tattoo for him, so I opted to have my brother and tattoo artist, Scott Foust, put my son’s name on the side of my foot. Later, I had highlights of black light ink put into the tattoo.
Use creative placement. When I had my son’s name put on the side of my foot, I had a very specific reason for doing so. It’s a place I can see easily, yet can’t always be seen by others. If you were to ask me what body part I disliked the most on adults it would be feet, but they are the things that keep me moving. So, I had Hunter’s name put there so that during the times when I just don’t feel like doing what I should, I can have a visual that reminds me that Hunter is sometimes the reason I put one foot in front of the other.
