Swollen Hand Help

A swollen hand may be a minor inconvenience, making it difficult to remove rings or other jewelry. On the other hand, it may be a symptom of an illness. Here are some causes and possible solutions for this problem:

Gravity: If you hold your hands below your heart, there is likely to be some swelling in your hands and fingers. It’s not a big deal, and is easily reversed. The simple act of holding them up for a while can reduce the swelling.

If your problem is a difficulty removing a ring and you don’t really want to wait for nature to solve the problem, you can try a little dish soap and/or cold water.

Injury: Fractures, sprains, strains and bruises can cause problems in any part of the body. Most of the time, there will be some swelling. To know for sure the extent of the damage, you may want to see your doctor. Sometimes these injuries require medical intervention.

For home remedies, keep RICE in mind. Rest, ice, compression and elevation will help you heal. A sling may come in handy as well, both to keep your hand elevated and to prevent overuse. A combination of willow bark and gotu kola could also come in handy. If you are allergic to aspirin or you are on aspirin therapy, you may want to skip the willow.

To prepare the herbs, put the willow bark in two cups of cold water and simmer it down to one cup. Turn off the flame and add the gotu kola. Let that steep until it is cool enough to touch, but still warm. Dip a rag in it, then lay it across the injured area.

Illnesses: If the swelling is not related to either of the other causes, it may be a sign of a serious illness. Certain types of cardiovascular disease can cause both your hands and your ankles to swell. Your doctor will want to perform tests to rule these problems ouot.

It is very important that you talk to your doctor before using any herbal supplements. The doctor can make sure you have an accurate diagnosis, and will know if the herbs will cause problems with any medical conditions you have. Talk to both your doctor and pharmacist to make sure there are no drug/herb interactions. This can keep you safe from side effects as well.
