Social Media Inside the Classroom

In my experience In both high school and college classes and courses, the use of social media such as Facebook,MySpace and Twitter have become more prevalently used. The use of social media in the classroom has changed the way both teachers and professors interact with their students. One such example of a class-changing use of social media is Google Plus. As noted by Edsocialmedia, everything from Screen sharing to Google Docs applications that in the past would have tethered a student to a desktop computer can now be performed actively while on the go.

I personally use social media to keep in touch with different events happening on campus, for example the comedian Pablo Francisco recently performed and the production organization (In my case, Osprey Productions) had the information on their Facebook page in order to inform the campus of the event. As far as official facebook pages, my university has many official pages for each organization on campus.

In my coursework, I have found there are mixed reviews about the use of social media within particular courses. Some of my professors range from embracing it with open arms (which is usually the case in my major of communications) to professors completely detesting the idea of using social media.

The concept of social media in the classroom is still relatively new but as time passes I think and believe the hallowed halls of academia will learn to use this new technology in order to further educate the next generation.
