Smartphone Review: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is among one of the most hyped smartphones for the Galaxy series. The original Nexus was to be a game changer in the phone industry, but it didn’t exactly launch as well as some would have thought. The beauty in the Nexus lineup is that it is vanilla Android, no other bloatware running on top, which means the Nexus line up is among the first to have the latest and greatest version of Android.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus comes in the familiar candy bar design. The beautiful 4.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus is absolutely stunning, even in direct sunlight. The curved glass display is fairly unique to the Galaxy Nexus and provides it with a subtle, yet different design characteristic that catches the eye. Above the display is a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera and rounding out the back is the 5 megapixel camera. Overall, the Galaxy Nexus looks smooth and sleek, and the curved glass gives it a bit of luxury.

Like others in the Nexus lineup, the Galaxy Nexus features the latest and greatest flavor of Android, in this case, version 4.0. The operating system is fantastic and absolutely smooth. There’s little to no lag when using the smartphone. The interface is also very clean and users of a tablet will be very familiar with Android 4.0. The incredibly powerful hardware also helps in the responsiveness, allowing the Galaxy Nexus to feel smooth both inside and out.

The 5 megapixel camera on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a bit surprising, as most newer smartphones come with at least 8 megapixels. However, the Galaxy Nexus does have a “zero shutter lag,” meaning it snaps photos quickly, with less room for error. The front facing camera is 1.3 megapixels, allowing for video chatting that doesn’t look too cheap, though it’s still a webcam type of camera. The battery life was decent and was able to last a good solid day before it started to die. This was under regular use, which included calls, texting, browsing the Web and playing some games.
