Small Town Living: Local Community Knows How to Have Fun

Always wanting to be where you are not isn’t always greener. When you make the most of where you are and what you are doing in your life can give you more than the other pasture.

Small town living has advantages. I have lived in a small town for most of my life. The small town communities take care of their own when disaster hits, during the good times, and just for sheer fun of getting to know each other.

City swimming pools have more than just open swim times to the public. There are things to do in small towns you may not realize are happening. The city pool here has hosted swim team meets during the summer. They also offer swimming lessons for a fee to the community. It’s also a good and fairly cheap way to entertain the kids during the summer.

Two small city maintained parks. One park is located on the same block behind the pool with a small play ground for the kids when the pool isn’t open. The other park is located by the Junior League baseball field where little leagues play during the summer. This park also has a skate board park. Another advantage to this park is for the senior citizens of the town, their center sits right in the area too.

Both of those parks are just blocks from the local Pizza Hut. Why not grab a pizza, go to the park, hang out, and have some outdoor fun with the family or friends?

The gym scene. The local high school has hours set up for the community to use the school gym when school isn’t in session. Summer hours are a little more open than when school is in session.

Music, weddings and more at the arboretum. Spring through fall is the most active time for the arboretum these days. There are summer music concerts that start with the town’s Tulip Time festival. Some have held there weddings at the arboretum. A few local groups hold meetings there from time to time.

A town museum and library. Yes, my town has a town museum about how the town happened. The library hours vary from day to day but you can get to know more about this small city from the librarian who seems to have lived here all her life.

National Night Out. My small town has been participating a National Night Out for a few years now and is put on by the local Chamber of Commerce and everything is donated by the local businesses. This can show you how well put together and friendly a small town can be. Even the local Fourth of July community event is sponsored and maintained by citizens of the town.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find I have missed activities in this small town because there is something going on behind the scenes with the locals many don’t see.
