Review: Walgreen’s Brand Flexible Drinking Straws

My youngest daughter loves those little yogurt drinks you can buy for kids at just about every grocery store. She will drink two or three of them in a sitting and they are perfect for days when she skips her nap and is too tired to eat because I can get something in her stomach before she falls asleep.

These happened to be on sale this past weekend and I picked some more up for her as a result. However, after I brought them home, I realized we didn’t have any more drinking straws; something that is a must when it comes to these because it’s the only way she can drink them without spilling. Since I had to run up to Walgreen’s for something else I forgot anyway, I decided to just buy another box of them there and ultimately purchased a box of the store brand.

My decision to purchase this product was based on two things. The main reason was I couldn’t find any other brands to choose from but, even if I did have a choice, I couldn’t argue with the price; $2 for 100 straws (yes, I could have found a better deal at a different store if I actually tried, but that would have required me spending time and gas).

Unfortunately, other than price, there really wasn’t much I liked about these straws.

Since my daughter was practically begging for one of those yogurt drinks by the time I got home, I wasted no time getting her one out of the fridge and opening these straws. Let me start out by saying there was no wasted space between them. They were packed in that box nice and tight and I ended up tearing the packaging a bit by trying to fit my hand in there. My first suggestion to Walgreen’s is to get a slightly bigger box; at least big enough to allow someone to actually grab one of these straws without as much effort.

Another thing I noticed about these straws is they are very flimsy. I normally just stab through the little foil overwrap on those yogurt drinks with the straw itself. I couldn’t do that with this brand of straws and had to cut a little slit instead. I also noticed the straws didn’t last very long with my daughter using them (she tends to chew on them a little bit); meaning every time she wanted a second drink (which is all the time); I had to get her a new straw too.

In fact, I’m not sure these straws would hold up to our own drinking habits; such as when I make my wife a mixed drink and she needs something to stir it with. I’m convinced, if I use ice, stirring with these straws would make them unusable for drinking.

As I said before, this brand of drinking straws did offer a reasonable price. But, if you have a more expensive option, I would recommend trying that one instead.
