Reverse Collage Tray Instructions

Recycle an old picture frame into a reverse collage tray. Whether the picture frame is plastic, metal or wood, this project takes it to another level. My suggestion is to use picture frames 12-by-18 to 18-by-24-inches in outside dimensions. Use reverse collage on smaller frames to create coasters or candle plates.

Things You’ll Need:

Newspaper
Picture frame
Desired paper items for decoupage
Scissors
Mod Podge
Sponge brush

Instructions:

Step 1 – Cover a flat work surface with newspaper. Place the picture frame on the newspaper. Remove the glass from the frame. Set the frame aside until the project is completed.

Step 2 – Cut out all shapes, designs or pictures from the desired decoupage items.

Step 3 – Turn the cut out designs over so the back side is facing up. Position the cutouts on the glass. Rearrange the cutouts until the desired design is reached. Lift the glass up periodically and look from underneath watch the design develop.

Step 4 – Remove the paper cutouts one-by-one. Position the cutouts in the desired location on the newspaper or mentally remember where each cutout’s position.

Step 5 – Apply a layer of Mod Podge to the glass surface. Immediately place the cutouts in their pre-determined location. Press and smooth the cutout onto the surface by rubbing in the center of the cutout and working your way to the outside edge. This removes all air bubbles. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely.

Step 6 – Apply a second layer of Mod Podge to the glass surface. Cover the glass with a pre-determined background sheet of paper that covers the entire piece of glass. Press into place. Smooth from the middle to the outside edge to remove all air bubbles.

Step 7 – Apply a liberal amount of Mod Podge to the back of the paper. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely.

Step 8 – Place the completed reverse collage glass in the picture frame so the Mod Podged surface is to the back. Secure in the frame.

Add tray handles to the picture frame if desired.
