Recap: ‘Terra Nova,’ Season 1, Episode 4, ‘The Runaway’

“Terra Nova,” Season 1, Episode 4, “The Runaway” starts with the sudden arrival of Leah, a young girl who has been living among the “Sixers” and who has decided to run away to Terra Nova, having lost both parents.

Spoilers follow.

Leah is all that a scared refugee girl should be, all tangled blond hair and wide, scared eyes. The Shannon family take her in, kicking poor Josh out of his room to make way for her. Taylor is also interested in what she has to say about the Sixers, where they are hiding out, and what they are up to. Most important, she may know who the mole is.

Just to complete the story, Mira and her Sixer cohorts take a couple of Taylor’s people and attempt to bargain with Taylor for the girl. Oddly, they give up a little too easily, because there is a plot twist coming.

Leah is a spy, working for the Sixers because Mira has threatened her little brother. However, she may be small and quick when she obtained that item from the house where Mira lived while in Terra Nova, but she does not having any escape and evasion training. She is caught and is compelled to tell the truth about her arrival in Terra Nova.

Jim goes on a mission to save the little brother, but is instead caught by Mira. Mira reveals that some of the folks in the 22nd Century would like Taylor to no longer be alive in the Age of the Dinosaurs. She also gives up the little brother, revealing that she is not such a bad gal after all.

There are a couple of subplots. It is revealed that Maddy is not quite cut out to be a doctor, having a gag reflect at the sight of bleeding or burnt flesh. This can be an impediment for anyone who has to put people back together who have run afoul of the environment around Terra Nova.

Second, it seems that Maddy’s gentleman caller really is a gentleman caller. Taylor has gotten the idea that young people should act as if they are in the 19th Century, asking permission of the girl’s father to court his daughter, and going through dating rituals. It is a quite charming social experiment and certainly more decorous than the hook-up culture that doubtless still prevails in the 22nd Century.
